If student accomodation then fair enough but Sunderland already has more student accomodation than students. As far as bringing money into the local economy students do indeed spend shit loads in Sunderland and the international students often have lots of disposable money. It's just that the uni need to attract more of them. The amount of Chinese students in particular has dropped significantly over the last 2 - 3 years.

Government immigration targets are killing the Uni. Most other countries don't class foreign students as immigrants, but we do for some reason. Silly gimmick really.

These are the plans (from skyscrapercity) to what the old store will be made into.

I am ower the moon that the absolute eyesore of the old Joplings store is going to be rennovated, it was by far one of the most horrible scenes in the city centre. Standing there waiting for the bus and looking at the decaying scenes behind me was depressing. It's a huge victory for sunderland city centre.

Love that they have incorporated the clock into the new logo like, class touch that.

Think they can change the colour as well. Should be an interesting building although the usual suspects will complain about it being a box

there's a sign on the demolished site of Gibbons butchers in Nile St advertising 'sunderland house' a development of 1 2 and 3 bed apartments .4 storey building
