The Fishing Thread

The winter fishing season is done here so now it’s slim pickings until the summer.

I might get out for a bit of flattie bashing but we mainly get flounder here and you can’t eat them. We don’t really get much plaice although there is the occasional Turbut.

Then it’s waders on and into the surf on the eternal search for bass on a lure.

I know I would have more success using bait but I really want to get one on a lure.

So it’s constant casting with light braid and lures searching for those elusive silvery slabs.

Interesting to hear what you sea anglers get up to so keep posting 🎣
Once the 31st March is done that is it for reservoir pike fishing until the 1st October.
Will miss it but then await the 16th June to fish the rivers.

Bizarrely you can fish the canals all year round.
Will be targeting Zander next month as live close to the canal and know where they may be. Lures or small live bait are the best methods.

I’ve still got all my fly gear so I could easily go fly fishing for a few months but I’m so out of practice I’m not sure I can remember what to do.

I’ve got three rods 7 weight and 5 weight. Two reels with relatively new lines on both floating and sinking.

And loads of tippet, flies, sinkent, floatant etc etc.

But after sea fishing for so long there’s so many bloody rules at fly venues.

I took a drive up to Sharpley the other day and yes it was raining but I rocked up for a look around and there was one bloke in the lodge who looked at me like I was a bank robber. If I had been someone working there I would have come out, said hello and asked if I could help. But no he just stayed in the lodge and eyed me suspiciously.

Not very welcoming.

If you don't mind the travel, try Embleton beach for bass on a lure, and decent turbot (to 5lb) on a running ledgered sand eel or mackerel sliver.

Pike have definitely spawned now and are moving for food.
4 today. Nothing big. 13lb, 12lb8oz, 10lb and a small 4lb jack.

Already ruled out my “Boddington” 20 and confident next year.

Final day of the Pike season.
Signed off with 3. Biggest 14lb 3oz. The others at 14lb and 9lb.
Very thin and long fish, fully spawned out and glad they will now get a rest and ready for Oct 1st to go again.
Have loved every minute and above all have learnt so much for the future.

Never thought I would have used a bait boat, experimented with different rigs and will miss it. All about the June 16th Rivers now.
Might get a few sessions on the canal and catch a few Carp to put a bend in the rod.
@Big Jeff @Jon Dough

The 14lb 3oz.

Conditions were tough will gale force winds on an open bank.

Well done mate. We have not been out for a few weeks but the tackle shops are now pushing new bass lures.

The weather is warming up ( not that you’d notice mind). The sea is warming up ( really?)

It’s nearly time to get those elusive bass.

Go for it mate.
The weather temperatures have been all over the place. Few weeks back we had that swarm spell and the Carp were cruising a few feet out from the bank. Literally a few hundred and nice fish.
Sunday the carp lads were catching nothing as appeared the night frost had killed it.

Hope you catch a few mate 👍🎣
Keep us posted.

Good luck.
If you get back later in the year let me know.
You are more than welcome for a free fish on the reservoir. I have plenty of spare gear that you can use.

You sound like me.
I love the nostalgia fishing. I will be back on the Thames in June in the same swims I fished as a kid.

The pike invite open any time between 1st Oct to 31st Mar.
You only have to ask mate. You would love it 🎣

Heading over SW Scotland tomorrow to see if I can get some crab from my old haunts, do a bit of Bass fishing while I'm there. Hopefully hit the Holderness beaches sometime over the weekend or Monday for the Smoothies and Bass.

Ideal for the mackerel, and cheap as chips.

The glorious 16th ls looming.🎣
Did you ever read or have a copy of MrCrabtree’s fishing book?
It was my go to as a kid. I definitely have it in the loft. Used to look at those illustrations and think of them whilst fishing the mid Thames in search of the species they were targeting.

Always great to see how you Salty lads are doing. Keep posting mate and tight lines.
