Only bell has looked in nickI'd say we've got two batsmen to reliably save us here, if Bell and KP are skittled then no-one after them is going to stay in long enough against an aggressive field.
So once again we're relying on one or two not just to post a total but to save the innings. This is why England aren't as good as people think they are. On paper we've got a good batting line up, but in reality we've only really got three at present who can play reliably well.

To be fair, KP was in the first innings and Root was at Lords.
If we had batting options equivalent to our bowling options, both Trott and Bairstow would be looking at a spell out of the side after this match.
One good innings should be the norm from your top 6 batsmen. Being rank average for the rest of the series highlights a lack of form.To be fair, KP was in the first innings and Root was at Lords.

ThisIf you're looking to really compete at top level having a good knock once in a series should be a given rather than a notable occurrence.
The top six in this order can all hurt you hard on their day, no question, thing is when only one of them has their day and the other five don't support that you're rarely going to be putting the sort of score together to threaten a really good team. I'd say England only really managed to put together one impressive innings with the bat.
Fortunately Australia can't bat or bowl well enough to put sufficient pressure on but against a team who can bat and bowl we would have been 2-0 without question. Take one of Swann or Anderson away and this England team wouldn't win much playing as they have been this past two years.
You're loving this aren't you. England's problem isn't a lack of quality, our top 5 can stand up to anyone on their day, our problem is a lack of form from the 2 players who can anchor an innings, Cook and Trott. Both have had terrible series up until now and if either can remember how to bat between now and Friday will be the difference between 350 all out and 550-5.
Go after them, would rather lose going for it than just waiting for wickets to come. Get them worried by getting runs
The negative mindset of our batsmen creates doubt when playing shots.....weve come out today to try and defend and get the draw...Roles reversed and the aussies wouldda come out to bat to chase down the total...wheres that fuckin rain at![]()
