The afterlife

Read Darwin "Evolution of the Species" et al. There is no afterlife. Do dogs and cats have an afterlife? They also have one head, two eyes, one nose, one mouth and so on.

Not necessarily reincarnation, but I do believe yer body is just a vessel and that's the part that dies. The rest of you (soul, energy, lifeforce- whatever you want to call it) doesn't cease. It just becomes part of the 'universe'.
What happens if you are brain damaged? Suffer a stroke or some other malady, are you suddenly better because you have died. Why not get better first and save your life,

And what makes you believe that? I'm genuinely curious.
Well, I've got not evidence or proof obviously. I'm not religious in the slightest either, but I did grow up round Glastonbury and loved a bit of LSD back in the day. Maybe it was that.:)

I dunno. I can see how meat just rots away after it's killed. I buy into that, but I just see our bodies as vehicles for our personality and since it could be argued that it's a type of energy, and energy can't be destroyed, just changed from one form to another then I don't think it can just cease to exist. Nor do I reckon there's any sort of consciousness (on a level we can comprehend as humans anyway) after we die mind. Just that part of us lives on. After all, were all made of matter that was created at the Big Bang.

Ok thanks for explaining.

I meant as in better health, no point in living forever with brain damage.
Nah cos if you're dead you have 0 health. It could be argued that the energy not being allowed out because of the breakdown in the vehicle due to the stroke etc has been released after you die tho.

I like this (alleged) exam question and answer;

Bonus Question: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic (absorbs heat)?

Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle's Law (gas cools when it expands and heats when it is compressed) or some variant.

One student, however, wrote the following:

First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time. So we need to know the rate at which souls are moving into Hell and the rate at which they are leaving. I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to Hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving.

As for how many souls are entering Hell, let's look at the different religions that exist in the world today. Most of these religions state that if you are not a member of their religion, you will go to Hell. Since there is more than one of these religions and since people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that all souls go to Hell.

With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in Hell to increase exponentially. Now, we look at the rate of change of the volume in Hell because Boyle's Law states that in order for the temperature and pressure in Hell to stay the same, the volume of Hell has to expand proportionately as souls are added.

This gives two possibilities:

1. If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter Hell, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will increase until all Hell breaks loose.

2. If Hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in Hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until Hell freezes over.

So which is it?

If we accept the postulate given to me by Teresa during my Freshman year that, "it will be a cold day in Hell before I go out with you", and take into account the fact that I went out with her last night, then number 2 must be true, and thus I am sure that Hell is exothermic and has already frozen over.

The corollary of this theory is that since Hell has frozen over, it follows that it is not accepting any more souls and is therefore extinct . . . leaving only Heaven, thereby proving the existence of a divine being, which explains why last night Teresa kept shouting "Oh, my God!"

Yes, read a lot of books don't always remember every title exactly off the cuff, sometimes too lazy to look them up. You got it anyway.
Hahah at least you didn't call it "Origin of the Species" like a lot of people do. Very little of the book is about us. Darwin made himself ill with worry about that subject because he knew he would be crucified (metaphorically) by the happy clappers. It's why he delayed so long and Wallace almost pipped him to the post.

Yes, I knew about Darwin and his anxiety problems. The loss of his children, the rejection of his work by his university and his mentor. Religion was the problem his ideas went against the teachings so he must be mad. His work certainly challenged the life eternal myth. Lux Aeterna. A lot of his work was on barnacles and the different variations in small areas, each adapted to it's own environment. Mind, it has been a long time since I read it.

It amazes me how arrogant humans are thinking its only us with an after life. Catterpillers turn into butterflies.
True but butterflies die after one day, I believe. Then what?

Anyone interested in near death experiences and such give the below a read

I worked with a man who had been interviewed by several academics about his near death experience. He had almost died while swimming but "came back to life." I can only think that he was never actually clinically dead in the first place or his brai would have been damaged. He saw the bright blue light at the end of a long passageway/tunnel. I am sceptical.

I am sceptical.

I'm more than sceptical. There is a reason the James Randi prize sits in a bank account. I don't he needs to worry.

All it takes is for some twat to die, go next door and note the value in the random number generator, return to their body and once they're back alive just report it. Simple as that. We're waiting........
