Sunderland vs boro 22 Jan 23

Not a derby. However, the game has plenty of edge about it. So feels like a derby to some.

All depends if you interact with any Boro fans in your day to day life I find.

Back in the '80s and '90s it was just another match for us, and we grew up half way between Sunderland and Middlesbrough. That said, we didn't know any Middlesbrough fans.

But, when we got into Sunderland there was always a bit of an atmosphere over and above 'just another match'. The conclusion I drew was that for some reason people in Sunderland and surrounding areas saw it as a bigger match than those of us from East Durham.

From those days, obviously the big match was Newcastle, and I'd say then Leeds and then Middlesbrough. When we played Leeds in those days, it was always a different atmosphere from just about every other match.

It's my lad's 14th birthday on the 19th, and I've mentioned on here that the day I knew he finally 'got' Sunderland was when we watched the playoff final in the pub. He cried when we lifted the trophy, but couldn't say why - he'd only shown the faintest of interest before that.
He's asked for Boro tickets for his birthday. It's under his skin.
Poor bugger.

Ohh watch it a few more threads will be created about how they don't care about us 😉

Tough game, being negative I always think our record against Sunderland is due to come to an end. Just the law of averages.

I think it is more important to you than it is us. I am from Northumberland and the only reason it is more than a standard league game for me is the fact you lot are up for it

😂 Well this is something I have never heard before.

Those smog suits must have been a myth.

Generally true for me though - I grew up an hours drive from Boro. My dad worked there and I think he wanted to beat your lot more because of that (even though he wanted you to win the league cup for his mates he worked with).

We have been allocated 1,955 tickets as a full allocation, what a joke that is.

What did you expect? It's Sunderland AFC after all! Nearly a 50,000 capacity, there will be thousands of empty seats and they give Boro less than 2,000. SAFC = Tinpot club!

Meh. Just a shame really. Better day for both sets of fans when more away supporters are there. Regardless of being a Derby or not. When I go to a Boro match I always want as many away supporters as possible. It's just better.

We have given other teams plenty more than that this season, there's no reason the football club would turn down the money. It will be on police recommendation. I'm not saying I agree by the way, but I see the club are getting stick from Boro fans on twitter when it 100% will not be the clubs decision. Say we give you another 2.5k at £25 it's over £60k + sales in the ground. No reason we wouldn't want that.

Just in the past we have been given more. This might be the lowest we have ever been given for the stadium of light.
