I don’t really mind the formation tbh. The issue I have is the personnel in the team and on the bench. Looks like another game of trying to attack exclusively from the wings and completely refusing to attempt a pass through the middle. And afterwards he’ll criticise Grigg for not doing well enough up front.

no central midfielders in the bench who can offer a decent pass. Could do with Neil there if he feels Embleton needs more rest.

Same with Power against Mansfield, he was rightly dropped in the league and we won both games. He got brought back in and was absolutely shite against a league 2 side but somehow gets his place back. Pathetic.
It is pathetic. Power talked about seeing a different side to his game when he was put in an advanced role - since then no goals and no assists. To me you either play Leadbitter or Power not both. And Leadbitter is at least twice the player Power is.

What would be the point bringing a lad on who'd struggle to play? He's going to be a big player for us this season, he will be back in the squad for the next match.

So why play Willis in that exact same instance?

Ill guarantee Embleton is fitter still than Willis at the mo as he looked knackered mid week

Gooch is completely wasted as a wing back imo. It negates all his attacking threat and adds in his low defensive ability. I'd be angry if I were Gooch being told to play there.
I often find when I'm running a team through my head that it's fine until I reach the attack. Gooch gives us a bit of something there, particularly when Maguire is off-song.

Playing Power and Grigg together cos Power set up majority of Grigg's goals at Wigan? Just thinking out loud.
When was the last time Power got an assist for Sunderland - he's a poor passer of the ball, he has no pace and he has no tricks. How that would benefit Grigg is baffling.

Hate to say it but Scowen ended up centre half mid week 343 Willis Wright Scowen; O'Nein Leadbitter Power Hume; Gooch behind Wyke and Grigg. Don't know why Matthews is starting if Burge on the bench think we could struggle today
