Sunday is our biggest game for decades

We're playing a team BELOW us on the final day of the season. That doesn't sound like a big game but just look at the cost of the Chelsea squad, we think the mags have spunked some money. Over a billion quid so win, lose or draw on Sunday we have proved we can play with the big boys. Not the biggest but it's up there.
The fact that Chelsea have a game tonight will hopefully help us - one or 2 key injuries please🙏

It’s been a wonderful season, and it’s great going into the final game with the possibility of Europe to play for.
If we still had the “old Sunderland” that I’ve known for most of my life, then I would say that Europe is probably a poisoned chalice.
However, this is the “new Sunderland” where anything is possible.
Bring it on!

I agree it is.

Ultimately, to me the goal is always to finish as high as possible in the league. The whole point we're in a league system is to aim to be champions of it. And Sunday not only gives us the opportunity for our joint highest finish since 1954/55 but also to qualify for European competition for only the second time in our history. Yes, playoff finals etc have been enormous. But they're only enormous because of their implications for getting us towards finishing as high in the top division as possible.

to be honest, i don't think there's any pressure on the lads.
And i think they will go an play with a great deal of freedom
It's a free hit and a great potential cherry on top of a ridiculous season with a sell out home crowd all up for it
Pressure will all be on Chelsea

I don't agree to be honest - I'm looking forward to Sunday and don't deny it's a big game but compared to the stomach churning feeling I had last year ahead of the play-off final and it's not even in the same stratosphere. Getting back to the top table is bigger than a shot at the Europa Conference.
nah we've been up and down loads of times, im far more nervous about sunday than I was the play off final........Chelsea game is the biggest one since the 2014 Cup Final.

Would be a nice bonus

Play offs were far bigger.

Even Newcastle. I think I'd rather beat them twice than make one of the European competitions (part of the issue is that there are so many and half of the league qualify fir them)

It's a big game as it would take us into uncharted territory if we win and other results go for us . We've got to go for it . The barcodes heads would explode .

It is for me like. In my lifetime I need to tick off winning a Cup, and playing in Europe.
Oh don't get me wrong if we get to Europe I'm already taking the bairn out of school and trekking to the arse end of nowhere. It's the chance of a lifetime.

It just doesn't have the essential feel of a promotion.

Well from that fact we are reliant on others makes the game not our biggest in decades.

If it was simply we win and get x european football then it would be different.

But despite the above I'm more buzzing for this Sunday then I was any game in recent memory.
Undestood completely. I'm buzzing too. Obviously the play-off games last year were bigger. Ballard's header min 120 will live forever.

Last time we were in Europe was 1974.

Sunday is a bigger game than any of the playoffs. This is it. After a decade of despair we are on the verge of European football after only one season back.

I still can't quite believe this is where we are. I can't even talk about it without getting emotional. I'm so proud of this team. I f***ing just love them!

No it isn't.

This is a nice to have. Play Offs were a must have.

No it isn't.

If we lose people won't hold be crying in their beer like they would if Coventry had beaten us or Sheffield had won at wembley.

It is a big game but more of a great celebration that we have had such a wonderful season and this is a potential bonus.

Santa's already been. This is just another pressie we didn't see happening.

I agree. If we don't get Europe now, it isn't the end of the road for this group. We very much could go on from here and become regular challengers.
Before the play-off final I had the dread in my stomach that if we didn't go up, we might see the team dismantled and struggle to kick on.

Are you for real mate seriously show some ambition. Do ya have any idea what this could do for us as a club we may never see the likes again play off games will come and ago if we get relegated because we’ll always bounce back. This is a once in a lifetime experience for generations a chance to put our clun on the global map and turn in revenue unheard of at our club. It’s the biggest game in all our lives apart from maybe the cuo finals which would have took us into Europe anyway
It's a big game but not nearly as big as the playoff final last May. If we get into Europe it will be brilliant, if we don’t it's not the end of the world. Unlike a playoff or relegation battle.
You’re saying a relegation battle is a bigger match than a game to qualify for Europe. This thread is horrendous where the hells the ambition in our fanbase Jesus

Relegation is a bigger blow than missing out on Europe. Spurs have been saying the next 2 games are the biggest in their recent history. That doesn't mean they consider staying up is better achievement than winning the Europa League. Calling Sunday a once in lifetime opportunity is lacking ambition. Do you not think we could challenging for Europe next season?
