Sunday is our biggest game for decades

Last time we were in Europe was 1974.

Sunday is a bigger game than any of the playoffs. This is it. After a decade of despair we are on the verge of European football after only one season back.

I still can't quite believe this is where we are. I can't even talk about it without getting emotional. I'm so proud of this team. I f***ing just love them!

It’s a massive game. Last game of the season in the sunshine, bank holiday weekend against Chelsea with the chance of Europa League or Conference up for grabs.

All the other last game drama’s in my lifetime have been either to avoid relegation, win the championship, make the playoffs etc.

This is unique. I can’t wait !

It’s an excellent game to look forward to.

-Bank holiday weekend
-Good weather

And most of all, whatever the result we can be very proud of our team this season.

It’s all shaping up to be a special match imo. Get it sold out and roar the team on when Xhaka’s video finishes.

Haway the lads.

I don't agree to be honest - I'm looking forward to Sunday and don't deny it's a big game but compared to the stomach churning feeling I had last year ahead of the play-off final and it's not even in the same stratosphere. Getting back to the top table is bigger than a shot at the Europa Conference.
Think I agree.

For now, I'm gonna let my gut judge how big a game this is, and I reckon I'll be a lot happier and calmer before Sunday than any playoff game or relegation decider.

This feels bigger in less tangible ways than a playoff though, more around longer term positioning and opportunity. Play off is more instant and obvious. Impact either way here won't be as obvious (other than no europe next season of course).

I'm defo nervous because like I said in another thread. I never in my life thought Sunderland would make Europe. I just didn't. Fact we are so close to it man!

Someone described it really well, that the difference is other big games (the play offs etc, promotion and relegation six pointers) were about us either getting back to our position as a lower half top flight team or maintaining it.

This game is not about that but about reaching a new level, in a way that only the four cup finals (73, 85, 92 and 2017) have been post war.

It's a very exciting game for that reason. If we achieve it, it's new territory for us all as fans, in a way a promotion just isn't.

But that also means the stakes of failure are much lower. We've had an amazing season regardless, and I never think about that not getting promoted.

We can get in the Europa League too you know?

If we win, Brighton lose to Man U and Brentford fail to beat Liverpool we're in the EL.

Was thinking this would make a good bet.

Shocked than man utd are 3/1 like! Similar price for a draw.

Brentfords odds at Liverpool are very similar.

Strange old season this.

I feel the biggest game was the Wycombe game (or potentially even Sheffield Wednesday in the semi final). I think a lot of people would have given up had we failed at Wembley yet again to such a small club to have to face a 5th year in that league. And god knows what the ownership would have done.

Would Alex Neil have stuck around - probably not. Would we have lost the likes of Ballard, Neil, Onein etc.
