Mostly Shit away day like. Remember Mickey Bridges scoring the winner which was canny when he came back on loan. The last minute Defoe penalty was decent with Big Sam giving it the “staying up” sign when walking off the pitch

Victoria Ground 1976 FA Cup and 1st League game of the season.
Seen some shit games between us over the years.

Highlights Defoe‘s equaliser at the death, Bridges late winner and the 1976 replay at Roker
Was at fa cup game and first game of the season. Both ended 0-0.

Hello folks – Stoke fan here in peace.

I work on the ‘Duck’ fanzine and I’m planning a different type of article for our next issue – out whenever something approaching normal matchdays return to our lives once more.

I aim to ask supporters of several clubs 5 questions about their perceptions of Stoke City in order a to create a big feature article“Us and Them.” For the following questions, feel free to answer in varied depth/ brevity but a couple of sentences at least for each is ideal:
  1. Generally how do you see Stoke City the club – a rival? Non-entity? Certain type of club? Disdain? Admiration? Pity?! As a fixture – is it of general appeal?
  2. Are there any Stoke players/ teams that have made an impression on you over the years?
  3. Are there matches between your team and Stoke you recall hating/ loving?
  4. In home / away matches, what have you made of the Stoke support? Any particular memories?
  5. The Victoria Ground/ The New One – what did/ do you make our of our home ground(s)’ the grounds? Any particular experiences or impressions?

Given our reputation over the years, this could be a risk but then again, it would be great if I could glean a diverse range of honest/diverse/ cutting/ funny/ serious or even complimentary views.

If you can be arsed, thanks for your time.

Take care of yourselves,
Lee Hawthorne @ORFYDUCKMAG

1Just another club
2Looked out for your results few years ago when you had a lot of our ex players to see how they were doing (not McLean though)
3 not really most have been dour games over the years with not many goals only one sticks out up here just before Bruce got the bullet 4-0 win to us n even that useless clown bramble scored

4 like most clubs have the usual idiot minority met some canny Stoke supporters few years back plus point to they hated them up the road

5 never been but looks like most 90/2000 stadiums moden not much character

All best with your survey and to Stoke

Evening one and all

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond to my trespassing on your territory.

It was obviously a bit of a stupid/ brave risk venturing on here asking about your perceptions of all things Stoke City.

I’ve seen the whole range of tones/ comments haven’t I?!

Nothing has really surprised me in terms of positives or negatives. Given the Pulis years/ our recent political trends/ the caper of a section of our support over the years... I knew what was coming. We are divisive club in the sense that folk seem either charmed by us (plenty of begrudgingly respect) or else we are downright despised! Believe me, we are as divided in house – getting our fanbase to reach a consensus on anything from Brexit to Pulis is impossible. There are plenty of lefty football purists who buy our mag at least!

As with any city/ club though, there’s more to it than meets the eye: generalisations were always going to crop up. That's the nature of what we do isn't it?

I also expected a lot of love for our old ground compared to our new place. What I would give to go back and stand once more on that old Boothen End terrace at The Victoria Ground.

What was heartwarming was the depth of knowledge and rich memories that football fans hold onto. I love the obscure links we have between our cities/ towns/ clubs through mates/ family/ jobs etc.

I sent out these 5 questions to fans of over 20 clubs. So far, it seems that fans of Wolves/ Everton/ Sunderland/ Liverpool/ West Ham/ PNE/ Oldham and Man City have responded in enough detail to warrant an individual article in the fanzine. I didn’t bother with Crewe, Vale or Arsenal for obvious reasons. One foaming Gooner did hijack the Liverpool to forum to have a pop though – him doing that made me feel like less of a sad b****** for what I was doing on there!

Whenever matchdays return to our lives, I will get cracking on some of these, publish them and then post them onto the respective forums.

I will have one more check in a few days in case any late contributions have surfaced. Cheers to moderators for allowing this as well.

Whether you were dismissive/ funny/ bitter/ knowledgeable/ brutal or complimentary – thanks very much for your time. Some wonderful stories emerged out of this – it made me realise how much we all have in common (every club seems to have a similar cross-section of folk).

Best wishes

- Went to your new ground once when peter reid was Sunderland manager. Lee clark scored twice and we won 2-0.I was 16 and very drunk. Lots of trouble after with your fans. Never really liked your club since then. Also hate charlie adam. On a more positive note I thought although the football was awful I liked the way pulis had you hard to beat at home and it used to piss wenger off.Hope this helps.

That's just the recent stuff. The total over a number of years runs into hundreds of millions. Not limited to this at all, and there are many other charity donations but she has sponsored the build of an entire wing at the local children's hospice and every year sponsors young adults from less privileged backgrounds through higher education and University to help them achieve their dreams and gain good careers from very little and poor beginnings in life.

The debate about how they earn their money will always rage on, and I'm not one to cast a judgement either way, but what they've done for our city on the back of that money is nothing short of exceptional.

Biggest employers in the area, a UK tax base that pays hundreds of millions per year into local and central government (276M last year alone, the highest by almost double), millions of charitable donations into local charities and damm good owners of our football club.

We aren't half lucky to have them.

1) Stoke are generally an undesirable team much like ourselves. Opposition in my opinion thank fuck us and them are not clinging onto the prem coat tails anymore.

2) stokes had some canny players... Shakiri was great like. We've had a few players play for both us and them, many crossing the red n white divide!

3) sunderland v Stoke is not a game for the neutral... Often they've been mind numbing encounters. Enjoyed the draw when Cattermole thought he was a goalie.

4) Non existant memories of Stoke fans at the sol... Down there they always come across as full of aggro in my opinion.

5) Hate the Brittania (much like boros ground). Thought the old ground was class, great atmosphere in a proper old school ground, watching Phil Gray bag the winner early on... Happy times

1976:- I played the nick from school one Friday and caught a train to Stoke instead. I was with a mate, we were 14 at the time. We found his aunties house in Congleton who let us stay the night, she also phoned our parents to tell them where we were.

We got in to Stoke at 8am the next morning and found the ground. We were way too early to get in so went in to a local café instead, it was full of Stoke lads. We wore the same colours so blended in ok and quietly got food. We sat out of ear shot watching what was going on. I eventually got thirsty and asked my mate if he wanted a can of coke?, he didn’t. When I got to the counter he changed his mind and shouted ‘Aye gan on then’. We instantly became the centre of attention.

We were followed out by a small mob of 16 year olds and confronted shortly after. We tried bluffing it, from the north east but live in Congleton now and support Stoke etc etc. It nearly worked but then the one and only bloke (about 18) opened my wrangler jacket and read the SAFC logo on my T Shirt. We were fucked, we got thumped a few times and lost a scarf or two ( we wore loads back then) but got out of it relatively unscathed considering. We went back to the ground and hung about outside the away end, there was still no one around.

Sunderland buses started arriving about 10am but so had a load of Stoke lads. They were giving the V’s to our lot whilst we kept flashing the SAFC T shirts and getting the thumbs up. It was a good laugh until we got sussed again but this time they looked like real nutters. We got chased down the road for what seemed like miles (probably 500 yards) and ran in to a pub in desperation. It was full of Sunderland, blokes not kids, we were safe. We stuck with them all afternoon, they were our new best mates.

The match was shit, I think we lost 1-0. We were both nervous about getting to the station as our new best mates were all on buses. We did not fancy the walk at all so left early and got away ok. We spent another night at his aunties then caught the train home Sunday to face the music at home.

We had been hit a few times, chased a lot, lost a few scarves and the match. None of that mattered at school on the Monday. The two of us had taken Stoke by then, it was a walk in the park.

Superb! I know there are plenty of things about the old days but... no kids today will ever experience such footy adventures in that way will they?

A few years later I got up at 6am to catch a bus to Stoke. We'd had over 2 foot of snow fall in five hours, it was an incredible sight, to this day I have not seen as much snow in Co Durham. I'd arrived home about 1am pissed and I'd left the back door open. We had a snow drift right through the house and the door had warped and would not close. Me father was going mad.
Despite the fact nothing was on the road or ever likely to be 6 of us still met up in the town centre and waited for a bus that had no chance of turning up. The game was postponed, despite there being no snow in Stoke the Sunderland team were snowed in at Sheffield.
