Rather watch paint dry as a Sunderland/Stoke match. Seems has always been the same and have been following the lads for over 60 years. In my lifetime it has to be one of the least appealing fixtures when it happens.

Highlights Defoe‘s equaliser at the death, Bridges late winner and the 1976 replay at Roker
On the second point.... so what. I sat in the Lambton Worm before the 2-2 SOL match with 2 other Mags. You lot did nothing...… speaks volumes i assume?

Hello folks – Stoke fan here in peace.
I work on the ‘Duck’ fanzine and I’m planning a different type of article for our next issue – out whenever something approaching normal matchdays return to our lives once more.
I aim to ask supporters of several clubs 5 questions about their perceptions of Stoke City in order a to create a big feature article“Us and Them.” For the following questions, feel free to answer in varied depth/ brevity but a couple of sentences at least for each is ideal:
- Generally how do you see Stoke City the club – a rival? Non-entity? Certain type of club? Disdain? Admiration? Pity?! As a fixture – is it of general appeal?
- Are there any Stoke players/ teams that have made an impression on you over the years?
- Are there matches between your team and Stoke you recall hating/ loving?
- In home / away matches, what have you made of the Stoke support? Any particular memories?
- The Victoria Ground/ The New One – what did/ do you make our of our home ground(s)’ the grounds? Any particular experiences or impressions?
Given our reputation over the years, this could be a risk but then again, it would be great if I could glean a diverse range of honest/diverse/ cutting/ funny/ serious or even complimentary views.
If you can be arsed, thanks for your time.
Take care of yourselves,
Lee Hawthorne @ORFYDUCKMAG

- Went to your new ground once when peter reid was Sunderland manager. Lee clark scored twice and we won 2-0.I was 16 and very drunk. Lots of trouble after with your fans. Never really liked your club since then. Also hate charlie adam. On a more positive note I thought although the football was awful I liked the way pulis had you hard to beat at home and it used to piss wenger off.Hope this helps.Hello folks – Stoke fan here in peace.

1976:- I played the nick from school one Friday and caught a train to Stoke instead. I was with a mate, we were 14 at the time. We found his aunties house in Congleton who let us stay the night, she also phoned our parents to tell them where we were.
We got in to Stoke at 8am the next morning and found the ground. We were way too early to get in so went in to a local café instead, it was full of Stoke lads. We wore the same colours so blended in ok and quietly got food. We sat out of ear shot watching what was going on. I eventually got thirsty and asked my mate if he wanted a can of coke?, he didn’t. When I got to the counter he changed his mind and shouted ‘Aye gan on then’. We instantly became the centre of attention.
We were followed out by a small mob of 16 year olds and confronted shortly after. We tried bluffing it, from the north east but live in Congleton now and support Stoke etc etc. It nearly worked but then the one and only bloke (about 18) opened my wrangler jacket and read the SAFC logo on my T Shirt. We were fucked, we got thumped a few times and lost a scarf or two ( we wore loads back then) but got out of it relatively unscathed considering. We went back to the ground and hung about outside the away end, there was still no one around.
Sunderland buses started arriving about 10am but so had a load of Stoke lads. They were giving the V’s to our lot whilst we kept flashing the SAFC T shirts and getting the thumbs up. It was a good laugh until we got sussed again but this time they looked like real nutters. We got chased down the road for what seemed like miles (probably 500 yards) and ran in to a pub in desperation. It was full of Sunderland, blokes not kids, we were safe. We stuck with them all afternoon, they were our new best mates.
The match was shit, I think we lost 1-0. We were both nervous about getting to the station as our new best mates were all on buses. We did not fancy the walk at all so left early and got away ok. We spent another night at his aunties then caught the train home Sunday to face the music at home.
We had been hit a few times, chased a lot, lost a few scarves and the match. None of that mattered at school on the Monday. The two of us had taken Stoke by then, it was a walk in the park.
A few years later I got up at 6am to catch a bus to Stoke. We'd had over 2 foot of snow fall in five hours, it was an incredible sight, to this day I have not seen as much snow in Co Durham. I'd arrived home about 1am pissed and I'd left the back door open. We had a snow drift right through the house and the door had warped and would not close. Me father was going mad.Superb! I know there are plenty of things about the old days but... no kids today will ever experience such footy adventures in that way will they?
I remember that occasion ,I was working away ,a place called Coleshill near Birmingham ,and managed to get to Stoke on the train ,wasnt the only lads supporter there either ,had a few pints and got the train back to BirminghamA few years later I got up at 6am to catch a bus to Stoke. Despite the fact nothing was on the road or ever likely to be 6 of us still met up in the town centre and waited for a bus that had no chance of turning up. The game was postponed, despite there being no snow in Stoke the Sunderland team were snowed in at Sheffield.
