Southampton spying compendium thread

I think they'll get away with it

There are too many complications if found guilty, easiest thing to do is just get on with it and they always take the easy option
What is the point of the rules if they get away with it. They cannot play in the Final if found guilty. The only option is for Boro to be awarded the game 3-0. All other options are too complicated and they won’t jeopardize the play off final. Too lucrative.

Southampton win play-off final. Spurs get relegated. Southampton punished by EFL with fine and points deduction next time in Championship. Premier League refuse to accept Southampton and keep Spurs up. Southampton implode next season and get relegated to League One. Spurs make UCL next season and win it. Richard Curtis makes hit romcom based on cheeky, unlucky in love intern just trying to make a difference in this crazy world.

Sounds reasonsble.
Wycombe to replace Southampton in Championship.

I think after the Leicester thing there is a new rule in place where the EFL/PL can recommend deductions to each other, rather than waiting until the team returns to their league
Yeah I think it's very new territory. Albeit I don't think it's the right solution here. I get the other posters saying it as it would suit the other current PL clubs.

Cant see this happening. Boro won’t have time to sort out tickets for their place in the final and their fans won’t have time to sort out travel and accommodation. Not to mention the saints fans will all be out of pocket for booking theirs already.

They will get away with a petty fine.

If it wasn’t for the football league and the premier league being separated then I would hope they would make an example of Southampton with a points deduction next season, but I don’t see it.

I think the rules need to be more robust and explicit to stop this happening again

They can’t possibly get away with a petty fine. Personally I think one way or another they won’t be playing in the premier league next season.

Off course they will have time. Southampton have taken ticket information down.
I think this is an independent committee that can impose whatever they deem sufficient. If Southampton are guilty they cannot play in the final. That would be ludicrous and rewarding cheats.

Their lawyers will be all over this surely, but it’s not whether Southampton would have lost or drawn anyway. Taking the points off them is a punishment for the cheating. Nothing to do with whether they may or may not have won anyway even if they hadn’t cheated.
I get what you mean, if they removed the points during the season it would be a nightmare, every club would be looking through every bit of cctv, could end up with Southampton relegated 😂.

It just needs to be something simple, if found guilty then kicked out of play offs, boro in the final and a -6 or something points next season depending on how many other instances they find them guilty of, 3 per match.

It’s a bit crap on Wrexham and anyone else who played them but we can’t replay the season from 5th of December so it’s got to be the best of a bad bunch for EFL. Maybe they are innocent though and this intern just loved watching boro.

The problem is that the rules are still fairly vague on this, even though the situation arose a couple of years ago.

I completely agree that she shouldn’t get away with it. If it was up to me I would have thrown them out and sent Boro to the final. But with the rules being as they are, and the final being so soon, then there really isn’t time to properly arbitrate this.

it’s actually a tricky thing to arbitrate given the timescales. They don’t have time for appeals, and so if they throw saints out, and then saints are successful on appeal, then saints would have a fair case to make a claim against the football league for a huge loss of income. But then if they are allowed to get away with it and play in the final, how do you really punish them in such a way that it acts like a deterrent to other clubs in the future?

Starting on -20 points the following season? Well if that’s in the prem then they’ve still made a lot of money making it to the prem. so it’s still not a real deterrent. You would think they would just not bother making a go of it and plan their recruitment for the following year in the championship with all of their extra money.

So do you not let them get promoted? And if so how do you decide who does get promoted?

I don’t really have an answer here I’m just trying to show how backed into a corner the football league are.

you really think the EFL give a shit about the fan’s travel arrangements.

Who knows what the outcome will be, but that won’t be an influencing factor whatsoever.

They definitely are guilty, I’ve seen the pictures of the lad spying myself. One of the tabloids was circulating it yesterday

I think the best course of action is award the first leg as 3-0 to Boro as this is the game that was directly linked to this 72 hour rule.

Then if the other teams present evidence and Southampton are found guilty of spying on other teams during the season, they have a points deduction for next season.

The body language, and the way he upped and left the presser suggests ( to me, anyway) that Eckert knows a lot more about this than he cares to admit.

Perhaps he really is some Wunderkind who's gone from absolutely zero managerial experience and being an under 21 coach to a 3 times manager of the month winner in 6 months, with a 62.5% win rate..... some transformation if so.

Perhaps not though...... ?

Interesting days ahead for him and the club.
