SOL expansion

Any talk of expansion is wild talk. Said it before and don’t care about saying again, our hardcore support imo is the loyalist in the country pound for pound as proved by average crowds of 30-40k+ in recent years when we’ve been through the lowest ebb in our history spending years in the third and second tier - this on the back of no success or real good times whatsoever both of which build up sustainable numbers over time. But unless we’re consistently selling the SOL out over a number of years and there is a constant demand or waiting list, it’s an absolute waste of money and will just make the experience of being in the ground for those of us who attend no matter what worse if/when we fell on hard times and the 47k+ falls to 40k or less again.
Yeah I agree, capacity it fine however we need some improvements as it is not up to modern standards for access / facilities

There are other stadiums around the world where this happens and the concourse space is huge. There’s not much hope for the west or north stand to have better concourse offerings really but there definitely is in the east and south.

East stand renovation makes more sense for corporate offerings (especially for concerts as the staging is always in the south) but south stand a better bet for redevelopment for football purposes. And from an aesthetic purpose as well! Approaching the south stand from the new bridge and after the sheepfolds regeneration will be a bit underwhelming

North stand concourse could easily be extended, just bring the concourse wall out to meet the overhang from the upper tier?

We may well miss out on gigs in future when the scum build their ground on leazes park. That will be the number 1 spot for large concerts in the north east. We would need to expand before they finish and build a reputation up for huge shows.
Agree, but need to improve hotels and local hospitality venues to really stop it as at the minute visitors are spending a big wedge in Newcastle when visiting SOL from afar

Weird, the bit that’s “highlighted” above the South Stand is pretty much the exact bit that would need to be extended to match the north stand extension…
This got permission in 2005 for an additional 7232 seats and that’s when that plan is from. Works have begun and so the planning permission is live. They could crack on at any point.

What do you mean by “works have begun?”

I know the club have to do a paper exercise to keep the permission live every so often.

Not many have done it as much as we did I don’t think, purely off my my experiences going to away matches. Our south and east stands look tiny from outside the ground.
We started the trend of having the pitch below ground level mate ..thats why the stands look smaller from the outside ....less steel less cost concrete is cheaper than steel!
They got permission to extend the north stand and the south stand at the same time under one application - once the work has started (the north stand) the consent remains indefinitely
Are you sure!if so how do you know this?

Planning to extend whole ground has been in place since day 1. They just have to keep it live. Upto 60 odd thousand in total from the top of my head.

Are we back to this ridiculous suggestion once again?

Once we can actually sell the stadium out pretty regularly and not just 1 PL season, then consider it.
Yep and im both halfs of the argument however thats not forward thinking at all..take the city centre for instance, downtrodden, shops shut, less than 1% population of the sunderland borough live there..no development in 30 years.....its now the most ambitious, fast moving, forward thinking development centre in the country....build it and they will come so to speak..
