SOL expansion

Where do you put all the support infrastructure for it? Bars, lounges and kitchens. You can't have all that hanging in midair off the back of the stand. You can't do anything without expanding the stadium skeleton. It's just as easy to extend the upper tier round from where the north upper currently ends.
Build out over the area now used for queuing. All the support services and hospitality access, including lifts, could go there. Some new bar area and concourse food facilities for the non-hospitality customers would be revenue earners too. This first floor space means we queue under it in the dry to get in. Perhaps those external 'smoking areas' (like at Norwich?) could be incorporated too.
Catering for all needs.

……and far higher average household incomes in their hoods.

Buffet boxes. Charge less. The power cables etc are all below the “extra added seats” at the back of the east stand already. Thing is they’d need a corridor to get round to them from the main entrance or a new cheapo entrance in the east stand.

Buffet Boxes ? Business case will need to charge more to justify expense of the build. No point doing this on the 'cheapo'. All in, or nor worth it.

I thought that’s what he meant. If it’s just add boxes to the stand that’s just crazy

This! Hospitality needs to be increased. The concourses are chronically inadequate both in size and amenities. The SoL was designed to enable it to be extended relatively easy

Aye they need to make the foot print of the ground bigger. Bring out the side structure under the stands and bring out the brick walls and double the concourses. Loads of space to do it

Ground was built in a different era. Although built with an extension in mind for a World Cup bid that never happened 63000 would have been too big. With the focus being on corporate tickets etc. No reason why they can’t extend it to 55k ish plus hospitality. That’s gonna need us to be an a premier league regular though. If we ever got big enough and that’s a big if you could probably flatten it and start again.

Biggest mistake they made in building the stadium was sinking the pitch below ground level. The space for concourses and corporate are massively impacted as a result. Went past the mags gaff the other day and the amount of people in and out of the big stand for a non-matchday was huge - loads of events going on that can generate revenue.

I might be wrong but most grounds do this including the mags. Its simply that their main stand is huge in comparison and has a huge footprint

Not many have done it as much as we did I don’t think, purely off my my experiences going to away matches. Our south and east stands look tiny from outside the ground.

Probably helped keep costs low in terms of building materials as well at the time

Massively helped. Plus the fact it used to be a colliery so there was already a massive hole😂

It is a shame though, because you can drive past the ground and it just looks like St Mary’s or the Riverside.

Would look amazing having a west stand style entrance on the east.

Sunderland consistently fighting at the top end of the Premier League would need the South Stand and East Stand extending. Could probably add a third tier all the way round tbh

There are other stadiums around the world where this happens and the concourse space is huge. There’s not much hope for the west or north stand to have better concourse offerings really but there definitely is in the east and south.

East stand renovation makes more sense for corporate offerings (especially for concerts as the staging is always in the south) but south stand a better bet for redevelopment for football purposes. And from an aesthetic purpose as well! Approaching the south stand from the new bridge and after the sheepfolds regeneration will be a bit underwhelming
