SMB Tennis thread (note there is a specific Wimbledon 22 thread)

YES YES YES YES
That's what 2019 feels like!

Buzzing for Medvedev, to win your 1st slam against arguably the greatest of all time when he's going for something as special as the Calandar Slam is unreal.

That US open joins Australia 2017 as my favourite combined. (Raducanu + Medvedev winning their 1st) (Serena + Federer comebacks)
Well, that was quite something

Serena / Vinci vibes all over again. The brain completely shot to pieces when 28/0 was on the line.
Let's be fair, the level hes put out in patches this year (Austalia final, Nadal at the french, the french final where Tsitispas played great tennis for the majority of the match, wimbledon throughout, the Berretini final 3 sets in the US QF) always meant he had to have a bad day to get beaten.

Still, Medvedev could really take off for the rest of his career now with the confidence that win will give him.

Only Wawrinka, Federer, Nadal, Murray, Del Potro had beaten the big 3 in a slam final in the last 15 years (give or take).

That win tonight cannot be understated just how big it was.

Yeah agree with your last line massively, could be the making of him. His game and style seems perfectly built for playing against Djokovic and he's got the serve and backhand to beat Nadal on hard. Think he believes and knows he can beat them anyway but now he's beaten one of them in a Slam it could be a complete game changer.

Will be interesting to see how Djokovic reacts to this, it's the most human he's ever looked tonight. Crying during the final changeover because of the support and then what he's said in the interview and in press after. Had a massive hangover and a bit of a fall off after he first won the French and completed the career slam first time, wonder if we see that again or see him back to a high level with some of the pressure off.

I knew Djokovic would lose today as the exact same happened the year he lost to Nadal. He had a tough five setter and just didn’t have the legs for the final.

Sounded like trying to put off Mednevev off when he was serving for the match. Massively cheering even if put first serve in the net. Had a few double faults
Also wouldn't be quite when he was trying to serve when he had 2 championship points then cheered his double faults.
In the last game they were booing when he won a point.
One of the most disgraceful crowd performances I've ever witnessed.
The mental strength from Medvedev to get through that was immense - can think of a few players who would have struggled to cope in that situation

As bad as they were, the crowd was nowhere - and I mean nowhere - near as bad as they were in the 2015 final. That was horrendous.

Same after the Serena / Osaka final. It's always the US Open crowd or the Indian Wells & Miami crowd.

The main man Liam Broady into his fourth challenger final of the last twelve months and eighth of his career overall. Hasn't half grafted his bollocks off the last year and a half.

Already set for a career high ranking on Monday morning but more importantly he's currently sat 95th in the 2021 race so he's in with a great shout of breaking the actual top 100 by the end of the year for the first time. Outside chance he might be above Muzz by end of year...

Be favourite going into the match tomorrow, might be the first time for him. Hopefully he gets over the line for his first pro title, more than deserves it.

Poor lass looked shot to bits at times there, errors all over the place and dropping her head constantly. Not a massive surprise with how much pressure's been put on her. Can't imagine the inevitable 'she should never have split with her coach!!!!' comments and media articles are gonna help.

On another note, the speed of Indian Wells courts are a joke mind. Have been for years. Clay court's my favourite surface but absolutely nobody wants to watch what is effectively clay court tennis on hard court. Load of shite. Who the fuck's come up with the idea of playing in the desert on courts as slow as these and decided it's an idea they need to stick with for years on end?

Great win for Cam Norrie against top seed Andrey Rublev in San Diego ( 3-6 6-3 6-4 )

He'll play Dimitrov or Ruud in Sunday's final.

Another good run for Norrie, with a very winnable match tonight.

With Murray out of the Davis Cup, Norrie will be the main man. Most likely it'll be Norrie, Evans, J Murray, Salisbury, AN Other (Edmund or Broady perhaps - neither have been up to much recently which is a shame)

Saw most of the Raducanu match until just before we kicked off last night. She needs a coach sorting before January looking at the two performances after the Open. Seems a bit 'hit it as hard as you can, as often as you can'. Does look very talented defensively as well though.

Also - good to see Murray get his first top ten win this year. Nobody can convince me that Hubert Hurkacz is a noticeably better player than Andy Murray based on their recent matches. Murray should have won in straight sets this week and done better in the other two matches. Whether that's a sign of Murray playing his best stuff in half a decade or a lack of quality at the top of the rankings I guess is the debate.

Do think he'll get beat today even if he is favourite with the bookies.

Fairly straightforward progress to the quarter finals for Raducanu today. 6-3 6-4 against Ana Bogdan.
Raducanu swept aside by Marta Kostyuk in the quarters of the Cluj-Napoco Open. 6-2 6-1.
