SMB Tennis thread (note there is a specific Wimbledon 22 thread)

The younger generation have just started beating federer regularly and he’s 40! So barring injury Djokovic has another 4/5 years potentially as the others aren’t good enough/bottlers

That’s the problem , the next gen are all hyped up bottlers that have achieved nothing so far ,Djokovic will keep beating them until he’s to old or has no motivation anymore ,now that Federer and Nadal are both done and aren’t winning anymore slams he literally has no proper competition .

Yup. Very doubtful Thiem would've beaten Novak at the US if he hadn't been disqualified.

Not really, think Djokovic is going to get this done in 4, Berretini has to win this set to have any chance for me

How many more slams do you reckon he can, despite winning 7 out of the last 11 (8/12 if he wins here) it's clear he's declining/younger players getting better. (Still the best in the world )
5 sets against Thiem Oz 2019 his best slam was 2-1 down in sets
5 sets against Tsistipas in France 2-0 down in sets
Being pushed by Berretini here at Wimbledon

Personally reckon he will get the US Open this year and maybe 1 or 2 slams next year and the year after ending on 23/24 slams

No idea to be honest mate, I think the bloke's completely unhinged  I think that's more of an issue than his actual ability. At the moment men's tennis is like dumping Man City in League One and watching what happens.

Glad you said you thought he's declining because I didn't think he was particularly impressive at Wimbledon this year. Let's be honest, Berrettini is basically Tsonga without the flair and he was his biggest competition this year if Fed and Nadal weren't fit.

He was phenomenal in that RG semi final to be fair actually, that was a fairly incredible level IMO. If Tsitsipas had any sort of Slam final experience he'd probably have won that tournament though.

Muzz won his first doubles match with Joe Salisbury last night, knocked out Mahut & PHH who were the second seed in straight sets. Salisbury and Muzz potentially aren't a bad team, the best dubs player in the country and Murray's always been an excellent doubles player. That bottom half of the draw is relatively well balanced, not really any easy matches but no matches where they'd be massive underdog. His brother and Neal Skupski won as well. Think men's dubs is our best shout of a medal in the tennis this year. Not sure I'll be setting the alarm for half 5 in the morning to watch Murray against Felix in singles!

Cam Norrie also into a final tonight for the fourth time time this year looking for his first title at tour level, hopefully he can finally get himself over the line.

If Djokovic could either win a singles gold here or win #21 at the US Open for the Golden Slam, which dya reckon he'd take? I think he'd prefer the gold medal.

US Open draw expected in the next couple of hours or so. Any case to be made for not skipping straight to a Djokovic v Medvedev final? Can't really see how either can have a tough draw. There's only really Zverev who's playing well right now, he'd be the one you'd want to see in the other half of the draw if you were either of them two. See where his head's at and what sort of reception he gets from the fans after the article that came out about him last night I guess... Good to see Rublev finally beat Meddy bear last week, would like to see him back it up over the next fortnight but not particularly hopeful if he came up against him again in New York.

Got a good chunk of British lasses and Liam Broady in the second round of qualies today as well, fancy Broady's chances even though he'll be playing #1 seed most likely if he wins today. Would hope we'll get 2 or 3 lasses through as well.

Nadal, Federer and Serena all withdrawn before the start of a Slam. Ticket prices for the finals if Djokovic and Osaka don't get there will be through the floor

There’s questions over Djokovic mentality lately. Over the past year he’s lost the plot several times.

I think Medvedev will win it this year.

Had a few quid on Zverev a few weeks ago at 11/1, he is the only one who could realistically beat Djokovic but he would have to play the match of his life and he is also just as likely to lose in the second round to someone terrible.

Medvedev has a brilliant draw and should make the final no problem but I just don’t think he’s any closer to winning a slam than he was last year when Thiem beat him easily in the semis, he just always seems to fall short against the very best at slam level. Would expect Djokovic/ Zverev to beat him in the final.

It would have been a lot more interesting had a fully fit Nadal or Thiem been playing but I don’t think either of them have been fully fit at any point since last year, as things stand only Zverev realistically has a chance of beating Djokovic but I still think that’s unlikely.

Murray playing well and Tsitsipas leaking errors from all over in that first set. Not getting my hopes up yet but it's a decent start...

Johanna Konta has withdrawn from the tournament hours before her first round match citing an injury. She also pulled out of Wimbledon and the Olympics due to Covid issues.

Is this just bad luck or is it something deeper? She was a top tennis player and just seems to have gone to pieces over the last 2 or 3 years.

Going five. Regardless of result this is tremendous fight, haway Sir Muzz!

Covid's affected tennis significantly more than it did any other sport with having to move about the world every week going to different countries with different quarantine rules, different vaccination rules, fans allowed/not allowed etc etc. Be next year before normality's back in tennis. Just last week fans weren't allowed in to the qualifiers for this tournament. Wouldn't be judging anyone too negatively based on the last 18 months, there's a lot of good players who aren't playing as well as they were prior to Covid.

She's not been awful outside of injuries though, split with her coach and then won the next tournament right before Wimbledon. Just bad luck with injuries and illnesses more than anything I think/hope.

Well that Murray match is going to take some beating for it not to be match of the tournament. Best Murray has played in years and his level only dipped a little in the last set which was very encouraging for him going forward. He just may have 1 last Wimbledon run in him yet.
Tsitsipas (shitsipas, cheatsipas) played really well those last two sets and to hang in on that tiebreaker when Murray was dominating.
Those breaks need looking at - Zverev complained of the same thing in the last tournament against him. 7-10 minute breaks every other set is ridiculous nevermind the implication that he's cheating by being coached. ATP need to bring in a new rule/time limit on these off court breaks

Tsitsipas does it all the time, has learned it well from Djokovic, it needs to be looked at as its blatant cheating.
