Sinners

Absolutely terrific. Action/horror film with a deeply political undertone, with first rate performances and great music throughout. (Think From Dusk Til Dawn, but not shit.) Might well be the film of the year so far.

(Hint: make sure you stay for the little extra bit during/after the credits, especially so for guitar fans, as it adds another little layer to the story)

9.5/10
Though the after credits scene was unnecessary and sort of ruined the story a bit tbh.

Rest of film was very good. Jack O Connell plays an excellent hillbilly folk playing vampire psychopath.

Was basically a DTD rip off but done better. Though I did love it at the time, it hasn't aged very well.

I'd give it 8/10

I was nearly gone when the after credits scene came on!

Saw Sinners the other night. The music sequence was incredible, but apart from that thought it was pretty average and way too long.

Incidentally, Michael B Jordan would be class if they ever get round to making a new Blade.

Took my son to see the minecraft movie today. I'm to old to have ever played the game but even still it was absolutely shite. The boy loved it however.

0/10 for me

Starred Up.

Really bleak prison drama. Young lad goes to jail and meets up with his father who is doing life. Good film which I can’t say I enjoyed but found it interesting. Jack O’Connell always plays a great baddie.

Certainly more likely to happen now, Mahershala Ali’s Blade film looks dead in the water.

Love that film, Ben Mendelsohn is class in it and I was shocked when I found out he was actually an Aussie.

You’re right about Jack too, he scared the shit out of me in Eden Lake 🤣

Bullet Train Explosion (2025)

A train will explode if it dips below 100kph.

Partial remake/tribute/soft sequel of the 1975 original, helmed by Shinji Higuchi. He’s good at handling the frantic bureaucracy/government machine scenes, like he did in Shin Godzilla, and the action/tension parts are done well, but some of the characters are poorly drawn. The motives of the antagonist are thoroughly explained, but don’t really ring true, and the escalation of emotions amongst some of the passengers is jarring.

Visual effects are a mixed bag - some are very good, others not so. There’s some lovely sweeping shots of the train travelling. The main character is played well, but there’s a lack of connect with the general setup that will really, really put some people off. I enjoyed it, because I like this type of stuff, but I can appreciate how the slower moments will bore the chod out of some people.

I put up with ten minutes of the dub before switching over to Japanese with subs, and it did make a difference to the sincerity of the film.

7/10.

Hell Drivers (1957) 8/10
UK's answer to The Wages of Fear. Cy Endfield directs a cast full of familiar faces (Stanley Baker, Herbert Lom, Patrick McGoohan, William Hartnell, Sid James, David McCallum, Sean Connery) as truck drivers working for a corrupt company that requires them to take ridiculous risks. It's halfway to being a classic. The driving scenes are great, but some of the melodrama falls flat.

I might give this another watch. I remember liking it, but slightly preferring the other Stanley Baker ‘Hell’ film - Hell Is A City. They have sod all to do with each other, I just happened to watch them both in the same week.
Hell is a City is decent but I didn't like the central villain. I've got a soft spot for Baker - Robbery was probably my favourite film of his before seeing HD.
I still haven't got round to watching 'Accident' yet - Baker and Dirk Bogarde directed by Joseph Losey.

I absolutely loved Robbery. Joanna Pettet is the cherry on the cake. I really liked him in Jet Storm and Campbell’s Kingdom. I haven’t seen Accident or Violent Playground yet but they’re on the watchlist.
