I saw this at the Robins in Durham on one of the smaller screens. You could hear a pin drop. Everyone seemed totally transfixed. A very good film indeed!

I'm a big fan of John Sayles, and I rated this as one of my favourite films ever when it came out. First time rewatching it since then...and it hasn't stood the test of time. The racial tensions on the Texas border are as relevant as ever, but it's a lot more soap opera-y than I remember.

The Devil's Brigade (1968) 6/10
From the director of The Wild Geese. A renegade brigade of Canadians and Americans is put together for action in WWII. There's deep antagonism between the two nationalities (apposite now), but eventually they become a formidable fighting unit. The film takes an age to get going, and the battle scenes fall flat. William Holden plays his usual self. Dana Andrews - once a big star - gets a couple of lines in a bit part.

While the City Sleeps (1956) 7/10
Dana Andrews in one of his last starring roles. The alcoholism that destroyed his career shows through. Fritz Lang makes a decent job of it, but the story about three rivals at a newspaper jostling to track down a serial killer, is hokum.

The film itself is cringe-worthy pro-Communist propaganda, with lots of scenes of decadent Americans exploiting the brave proletariat. But it contains some of the most dazzling cinematography in movie history. (I'd seen it on fuzzy DVD, now it's available from Criterion restored and in HD.) In one early scene, a tracking shot begins on the roof of a hotel, travels down the side to the pool deck, and ends up underwater. And this tracking shot is staggering, all done with pulleys and magnets:

I watched this yesterday. Also a 9/10 for me. Visually stunning.
It wouldn't have remotely been on my radar if you hadn't mentioned it. Thanks.

Saw that at the pictures, first time i'd seen McConaughey, didn't realise til later it was pre "McConaughey" McConaughey.

Yeah I saw it when it came out too, at The Tyneside in Newcastle, absolutely loved it , found it totally riveting, rated it as one of my favourite films of the 90's. Haven't watched it since , I've got the blu ray sitting on my shelf so I'll have to dust it off and give it another viewing.

Haven’t seen it for a while but it was a masterclass in tension iirc. Shame Mostow went on to make absolute drivel like Terminator 3

i watched Mickey 17 last night at the tyneside cinema, probably disappointing coming after Parasite being so good. Its not a bad film mind, but its not a great film. its a good premise, but over does the whole Trump thing so badly... maybes i'm overwhelmed by him in reality i don't need a fictionally version so badly imagined (i've avoided the apprentice with jeremy strong for the same reason). for all that ruffalo is brilliant in poor things (he seems to have so much fun with that), i just found him annoying as fcuk in this and its not because he's a bad actor (ditto Toni Collette).

Pattinson is good, although slightly overshadowed by Tim Key.

i'd give it a meh out of 10.

Sounds like I'm going to be disappointed given the talent involved.
