The Detective (1968) 6/10
Effectively the prequel to Die Hard, for which Sinatra had first refusal. By then he was 70 and not in great shape, so Bruce Willis got the part after he turned it down. The Detective is surprisingly gritty, with a plot that leads into the gay underworld of NY. Regular flashbacks recount Sinatra's unhappy marriage to a nymphomaniac (Lee Remick) - an entirely unnecessary diversion from the main story. Hearing Sinatra say 'Penis cut off' is worth the price of admission.

Smooth Talk (1985) 8/10
A 1980s coming-of-age movie that takes a turn into something darker, asking questions about the difference between seduction and grooming. Brilliant performance by Laura Dern. One point docked for the soundtrack. All the hip kids in this version of the 1980s were apparently listening to James Taylor.

I Walked with a Zombie (1943) 8/10
Jane Eyre relocated to the Caribbean, with added zombies. A nurse is employed to look after the ailing wife of a wealthy plantation owner. She eventually gets caught up in voodoo. Very edgy for a 1940s mainstream Hollywood picture.

Agreed. Although the bairn loved it. It missed not have Lin Manuel Miranda doing the tunes.
Set up for 3rd. Oh and the live action remake of the first one is out next year as well.
Yeah, the songs were really weak in comparison, they just tried to re-create the originals songs like for like but didn't get close.
That really hit home at the end when they reprised a song from the first.
Yeah a 3rd one certainly looks on the cards (and will surely be coming given how much money it made), I wonder how many people missed Jemaine Clement's crab character popping up in the credits?

State of Grace [1990] 8/10
Hell’s Kitchen, New York. Terry returns home after ten years. He reconnects with Jackie, a childhood friend and member of the Irish mob, and rekindles his love affair with Jackie’s sister Kathleen.

Any mob film that comes out the same week as Goodfellas is probably going to get overlooked. Sadly, this was but it's a gem waiting to be discovered. The cast is top-class - Sean Penn, Ed Harris, Gary Oldman, Robin Wright.
On Prime now.
it’s a belter. I would concur with your scoring.

Days of Thunder (1990)

Tom Cruise is the nascar racer with no regard for his own safety. A supporting cast including Nicole Kidman, Robert Duval and Michael Rooker are served poorly by a silly script. Some typical Tony Scott flair make the last 20 very watchable but it can’t make up for a paper thin plot.

4/10

Yep, the only reason I’ve decided to watch it. Looking forward to listening to them talk about Don Simpson during the making of this.

There’s a podcast for the discerning film nerd that takes number one spot I believe…
