Shay Given MOTD

He didn't refer to 'The Holocaust' and his use of the word as a synonym for catastrophe or disaster was perfectly valid. The fact that, in print, the word is being capitalised every time doesn't help but I am sure it wasn't capitalised in his mind.

Load of absolute shite.

I do still have a fond, if fading, memory of him keeping a clean sheet at Barnsley - along with some heroics from Paul Stewart! - when we were being battered there in the mid-90s, so I may be more sympathetic than some.
Take a second and reevaluate mate.

All I can think that ppl have only an interest in football and everything else they don’t care about and so don’t acquire any knowledge, palace player was a goalie I think can’t remember name
FA panel: Wayne Hennessey displayed lamentable ignorance of Hitler and Nazis

Don't see any need. What do you disagree with?
You seem to be implying that "The Holocaust" was an event that happened to Jews in WW2, but that the term "holocaust" is a generic term for genocide-type actions.
I've never heard of anyone ever using that word and not meaning the mass-killing of Jews. Never.

So it seems very poor, at least to me, to try to downplay use of the word in the context of a football match.

This is far worse than when Pardew used the term "rape" on MOTD and was never seen on the show again.

WTF. His use of the word was absolutely horrendous, however you try to spin it

Haway lad, why in your right mind would you use holocaust as a word to describe something in a football game?

No excuse for it

He was insane that day, drove in my mini, my first motor, with my first lass.

Was sickening he ended up at the mags. Possibly our best ever loan signing.

Quite a few footballers have died in car crashes however. They are enough words to adequately describe a poor or inadequate football situation without describing it as a car crash especially given what happened last year. Same as holocaust, Nancy's Celtic didnt win football matches, ridiculous to compare it to millions dying

I mean, it sort of is. The word existed before The Holocaust took place. You just don't hear it so much these days for exactly this reason; it brings to mind a very sensitive subject.

You know what though he shouldn't lose his job over it, he said something that was in bad taste but like most people who saty the wrong thing - me included - its always about the intent he was just talking it wasnt rehearsed his brain just did fart. He's apologised now move on would be my take on it.

You sometimes wonder why some of these ex professionals don't make managers then you realise it's because they are thick as fuck. Even as coaches you get the impression they'll just be doing when there coaches were doing with them. Not an original thought amongst many of them

I agree. He’s just had a brain fart, and coupled with being a bit thick it doesn’t help.

The Hennessy one was way worse
