Shay Given MOTD

Haway lad, why in your right mind would you use holocaust as a word to describe something in a football game?

No excuse for it
I haven't seen the clip or even knew about this until I've just clicked on this thread. It's a bizarre choice of words isn't it.

You know what though he shouldn't lose his job over it, he said something that was in bad taste but like most people who saty the wrong thing - me included - its always about the intent he was just talking it wasnt rehearsed his brain just did fart. He's apologised now move on would be my take on it.
Agreed.

Quite a few footballers have died in car crashes however. They are enough words to adequately describe a poor or inadequate football situation without describing it as a car crash especially given what happened last year. Same as holocaust, Nancy's Celtic didnt win football matches, ridiculous to compare it to millions dying
Haway man ffs. Elvis died while having a shit so anyone who says a game was shit is quite clearly having a dig at elvis.

Elvis died of a heart attack. He just happened to be having a shit at the time. Most people who die in car crashes are dying because of the car crash. Also Elvis died nearly half a century ago and wasn't a professional footballer. Diego Jota died last year and was a footballer. Thats the difference

You seem to be implying that "The Holocaust" was an event that happened to Jews in WW2, but that the term "holocaust" is a generic term for genocide-type actions.
I've never heard of anyone ever using that word and not meaning the mass-killing of Jews. Never.

So it seems very poor, at least to me, to try to downplay use of the word in the context of a football match.

This is far worse than when Pardew used the term "rape" on MOTD and was never seen on the show again.

WTF. His use of the word was absolutely horrendous, however you try to spin it

If you were looking for another way to say something in an interview and entered the words 'catastrophe' or 'disaster into a synonym finder you would find 'holocaust' in the list of words offered by most of them. You or I might think 'that might upset people, I'll choose another one' but as has been suggested, Given might not be the deepest thinker.

I don't think he's the antichrist. He's accepted he fucked up, he's apologised and he will probably lose his job, especially as there's precedent.

In a Google search, maybe.
But in real life absolutely nobody uses that term to mean anything other than the one thing.

Honestly, I'm not trying to have a fight over this. You've just got it wrong and it's OK to realise that and change.

Haway man
Just use a different word. They dont need to compare a shit managerial appointment to a human tragedy. Fiasco, failure, circus, farce, shambles etc. They are loads of words they can use. A shit French man not being able to beat St Mirren is not really comparable to any loss of life.

Didn't Rodney Marsh lose his job on Sky for something similar. Tsunami reference I think

With a lot of these on air gaffs, those who get canned were probably soon for the chop anyway and it's a good excuse to get rid. I imagine Marsh's time was up and he was very marmite.

Like I take much greater offence at people being wankered or on gear and driving, but Ant (of Ant and Dec fame) was welcomed back onto ITV prime time. I doubt any Jewish people were genuinely offended by what Given said and there was zero malicious intent.

If Given has made some mates at the BBC he'll be forgiven, if not he'll get the boot.

Can imagine Given now doing his homework the night before.. what strong word would I use to describe Nancys tenure? Disastrous? Too weak. 9/11? No too strong. Holocaust? Not sure what that is but it'll do"
