Running Thread 2026

Watched the cross country on you tube yesterday and it looked like a great day. Well done Sedgefield Harrier's & anyone who took part .
I've got my first ultra on two weeks-kingdom if Northumbria 55k. I'm panicking. My plan was condensed due to back and knee problems anyway. Was meant to do my last runs this weekend - 21 & 7 miles but throat is killing and I've a cold. Decided to try and fight it off rather than push on when I'm ill.on a positive I'm slow but have managed multiple 40 mile weeks. Anyone done such a big distance undertrained. I would have postponed and done it later in the year but I'm running for charity and awaiting an urgent operation which could happen any time

Are the Sonicblast plated, or did you mean something else?

Just checked, they're astro plate. I always assume people are referring to carbon plates.
Nah mate the plastic/astro plate. Not carbon, but something to stiffen the form isn’t for me in easy plods, but genuinely each to their own on this - they nailed the aesthetics with the sonicblast and magic speed but neither are for my taste.

I’m in the soft and squidgy camp for easy miles 😂
I enjoyed it, and I wasn't last 😀.

I was expecting a bigger turnout from the North east clubs like
Well done, looked tough going!

I’d say I was undertrained for the Saturn run tbf and the looped event made that easier for me - not sure if yours is all out or looped but take it easy, fuel well and don’t overdo the pace too early. Sure you’ll be fine but need to get yourself 100% first. Hope you’re feeling better soon

Took part in the first Kingdom of Northumbria last year.

Never run more than 13.1 miles before that.

Typically, the weather was beautiful for it, sun was out and it was hotter than it should have been.

Was going well until mile 22ish and my legs just went.

Had to bail out at the check point at mile 25.

Took me exactly 5 hours to get to that point which I thought was good going for my first ever ultra.

Sounds like you are more prepared than I was so my advice is to just get to the finish no matter how slow you think you are.

I have regretted not finishing for a year now.

Thank you for this it's helpful. I'm hoping to get to mile 26 ok - I've done e few road marathons so this is the next step. not sure how the less smooth path's will effect me. After that it's just fingers crossed. I've asked the weather fairies for no wind. Today's weather without wind would be perfect.
I'll let you know how it goes.

You can definitely overtrain on the last week of your taper but it's diffcult to undertrain as you're not really going to gain anything that'll have a positive effect the week before an event & you're not going to really lose a significant amount of fitness if anything at all by resting. Maybe do a couple of very easy "tickover" runs if you can but getting to the start line in the best health you can be in is far more important. Best of luck!

What’s the consensus on tapering before a half marathon? Got Cambridge on 8th March. I last did the distance at the end of Nov, but picked up a hip flexor injury, so training has not been optimal since then and has been rather condensed. Just been focusing on Zone 2 as speed work was aggravating the injury. Also couldn’t do cross training as cycling was more aggravating than running as knee comes up higher. Last weekend did a long slow run of 10 miles, and am debating whether to do at least this distance this coming weekend, leaving 1 week to taper before 8th March. Hip flexor still not fully better, but seems ok when running, and then feels aggravated for 24 hrs post run. Aiming for around 2hr 15 mins. Would this additional 10-11 miles long run 1 week before be beneficial or should I start tapering now?

Personally I'd do an easy 5 miles this weekend. More benefit in rest than 1 more long run.

Great effort. Well done!
Cheers mate, fastest HM I've ran since my PB back in 2021! Probably set off a smidge too quick but held steady after the hour mark, nice and flat course too.

Deciding to do a marathon last year is one of the best things I've ever done, dragged me out of a rut and remotivated me to train harder and get myself back to running paces I thought were long gone 🙌
