Boils my. Piss when people mention keanes transfer business being shite, the bloke dragged us from the bottom of the championship and got us promoted to the pl, then kept us up following season, he did a fantastic job imho, left us in a hell of lot better state, than when he joined, so what if he made a few bad signings on the way,he also made some great signings aswell.
Best to remember, the reason we didn't get much for players we sold was NOT down to him either but the f***ing first offer snatchers we had.

Was hoping for industrial strength frenchies with years of experience to set up a continental DoF/data-driven system.

Instead they hired Birmingham’s old youth setup, brought in LJ, and expected it to work without a hitch.

But sacking a coach then taking nearly 10 days to hire a celebrity makes a mockery of the last 18 months. Looks like we’re going to have to ditch Speakman and start over once this farce is concluded.
Personally think Speakman will move on in the summer either way. Even if we do get Keane, even if Keane does well, don’t think Speakman will recover from this. Getting Keane is a slam dunk.

That is ok, not everyone may agree, we are entitled to our own opinions but I think it is the wrong move to give full control over to a man who hasn't been in football for years. If he wants full control he is going to have to earn it and have the right players and staff set up for it.

I certainly wouldn't give him control of everything because of what he did last time, it was a long time ago. Still want Keane to come but hoping he doesn't get the say on everything within the club.
The elephant in the room is promotion and whether this team is capable of holding its own in the Championship. I’d say very highly doubtful, so a very big outlay on Championship standard players is probably needed. Given what’s been very well put earlier about KLD, could he be entrusted to supply that investment. If he can then who does he himself entrust with spending it wisely - a Keane, McCann, Neil or a Speakman?

As others have said, the only real conceivable reason for the delay is that it won’t be a bed of roses negotiating with Keane and it’s dragging on.

If it wasn’t him we wanted above all others, it’d have been sorted this time last week. I imagine the likes of McCann, Neil and Lennon would have dragged themselves up at any time of the night to have an interview and from there would have progressed rapidly.

All Sunderland managers are going to have some poor experiences in recruitment due to the fact that it’s difficult to persuade players to come here and we sometimes have to take a risk on those who are injury prone/lost form/suspect attitude etc . Newcastle and Boro have all suffered this and the only way to avoid taking risks is to pay over the odds which we have rarely been in a position to do .

Short term memories on here.

I'm a huge fan of RK and hope he is appointed. However, it's important to point out that his recruitment approach was the beginning of our death cycle. £8m for Anton Ferdinand and a huge roster of journey men.

The club needs to keep its head. We have taken the decision to head down the Director of Football path and we need to stick to it.
No short memories here.

What was wrong with Anton Ferdinand for £8m?? Going rate at the time. We got a decent amount of football out of the lad. He was certainly better than what we had and he improved us.

His recruitment approach certainly wasn't the beginning of our 'death cycle''. Without his approach to recruitment we'd have been in League 1 a lot sooner. He brought the players in that were required to scrape this club off the floor and win the bloody league at a canter. And then again to keep us up. And the business we did the next season ultimately kept us up again, even if he wasn't there to oversee it.

The squad Roy Keane assembled in 18 months* provided the platform for a ten year stint in the top division. It's questionable whether our recruitment has ever been as good since.

*Yes, 18 months. Not two or three years. Not four years scraping about in the third division following the process. 18 months, whilst winning the league and staying up.

You haven't picked up on 'roster'. Deems his post utterly pointless

Of course, if we do go up we will need better quality players in for another promotion push. If the owner doesn't put the money in next season then we stand little chance of getting near top end. That is a good question and where I would have my doubts about handing it all over to Keane to deal with.

I think Keane should have his say on players coming in, he is managing them but I don't think we should be giving him full reigns to spend whatever he wants for players coming in.
