The worrying thing is they thought they had on the relative cheap with Rusyn. Speakman was telling us for over a year that we didn't need or play with a traditional number 9 when it's the one thing we were pretty desperate for.

There was a lot of build up to signing him coming from the club. Noise about how he had been tracked for ages and whilst obviously he can be forgiven for not settling straight away and it being a big transition for him, he doesn't appear to be as quick as it was made out and his skillset quite average.

That after the loan signing of Gelhardt and similar mutterings who faced similar struggles.

I think the main thing we've all seen with Rusyn is that he's not a striker in the traditional sense, he's much more of a wide foward. He'd probably do well if he had a Stewart in front of him.

The strange thing is, we've hardly looked to replace the kind of player Stewart was. Surely the recruitment dept seen how important it is to have someone with height and strength, someone who would hold the ball up and bring others into play, as well as scoring goals themselves.

Hopefully, this Mendy lad can bring some of those qualities that have been missing for so long.

They've been hinting at a variation on 433 for ages and forwards who can play accross the front line. Mowbray even started with 433 last season before dumping it. Beale also tried a compact version with Ba extremely high up and moving right to central, with Jobe moving out to the right from midfield.

Rusyn has been used up front but prefers coming off the left - probably why his goal record is a bit hit and miss, but he doesn't really display the strengths of wide player in UK football in terms of the pace or the defensive covering. We generally don't play with a two anyway and Clarke being our strongest player makes him a strange signing.

Great trying to emulate say the likes of Liverpool with their high tempo and versatile front three, goalscorers out wide etc but not having a functional number 9 has left us extremely stale going forward.

I think they showed intent and tried harder than we did to get promoted, we (Speakman and co) tried the cheap option and failed.

I do believe that overall Southampton didn't pay 'silly' money to get promoted.

If Stewart had of been fit they might even have got a top two spot. He might eventually come good and be a prolific PL striker, who knows?

they would certainly have been better off strenghtening other areas of the team than buying a striker they didnt need..
in their defence though..they knew adams was leaving and signed stewart to replace him..
they didnt need him for promotion..they need him for the battle to stay up this season...lets see if he can contribute..
