Roker near Sunderland

One of my ancestors was born in Usworth in the 1800's, her address on her birth certificate is Usworth, Sunderland, Co Durham. Yet today Usworth is part of Washington. The local authority is Sunderland, the ward is Washington West, constituency is Washington and Sunderland West. Boundaries change all the time. Wasn't Sunderland originally just on the south side of the river.
Strange one as you had Usworth Airport at Nissan and Usworth up by Springwell Village.
Although maybe not as there is Usworth College, Usworth Hall, Usworth Park and the old Usworth pit and club (Sulgrave) inbetween.

In another posted she described seaburn as a town near Sunderland 😄
Amanda? She's got some nerve her like, always complaining and deleting posts because of incomplete information then whinging when she gets abuse (which is uncalled for to be fair). she's quite arrogant not to change wrong information mind, despite several locals correcting her. The problem I had is that it was an admins post so she can basically do what she wants, if someone else follows her advise then expect a few people to put on, stayed at Seaburn near Sunderland in the future 🤣

I always thought the A19 was put right through Washington road which goes past hylton castle through to where nissan is hences nissan is Washington road, Sunderland.
One of my relatives was born in the Usworth in the 1800's, her birth certificate says Usworth, Sunderland, County Durham.

Looks like I just repeated myself.

Seen this in the press a lot, pic of Roker or Seaburn beach, described as near Sunderland. Or even no mention of Sunderland at all.

Both are very much Sunderland.

Just heard on 6 Music, Whitburn described as Tyneside.

Also quite regular when the biggest place between Edinburgh and Leeds doesnt get a mention on the weather map.

Any others?
Whitburn is south tyneside

There was an article in The Times listing the 50 best beaches in Britain a few weeks back.
Seaburn, Tyne & Wear was listed, and no mention that it is actually in Sunderland in the description. WTF!
It's like there's some sort of agenda not to recognise any positives about Sunderland.

While anything within a 10 mile radius of Newcastle seems to be regarded as part of that city.

Need to remove that Tyne and Wear label. Hideous.

Tyne and Wear only exists only as a "ceremonial county" and describes a self-defined area in which a designated Lord Lieutenant operates.

Tyne & Wear is not a local Government area nor is it an ancient country or even a recognised city or town it has not and has never been part of any official Postal Address which are regulated by the Royal Mail.

Washy got a Newcastle Post Code because when Post Codes were introduced in the mid 1960's Washy was a small pit village that didn't have its own delivery/sorting office. Post Codes reflect the location of the main sorting office that serves a settlement it does not imply the actual location of the settlement itself. Washy's NE post code is simply an administrative quirk of the Royal Mail.

The Royal Mail also regulate post codes and postal addresses . "Tyne and Wear" has never been part of any address that has been officially prescribed by the Royal Mail . Indeed the introduction of Post Codes meant that addresses no longer had to include the name of the county or region in which the address was located. (e.g it was no longer necessary to specify in an address that Sunderland was in County Durham because the SR post code only referred to that Sunderland). Likewise the name of the neighbourhood within a city or a town (e,g, Southwick, Ryhope , Roker) do not need to be included as the numbers in the first part of a post code indicate that.

I came across a bloke on YouTube the other day who had visited Seaburn specifically to make a video about it. He described Seaburn as being a small town just outside Sunderland. This was despite the fact that he began his walk into Seaburn from the Bents car park and had failed within a few yards to see the very large sign welcoming him in to the City of Sunderland.
The mind boggles - stupid and blind.

Small town? Jeez. Some people are just too stupid. That's the first time I've ever heard that.

Supposed he could have just said it was just outside Newcastle. Small mercies.

Similar to whats happening on these Facebook groups. This admin in particular has posted every year about coming to Seaburn, first post was 'Seaburn isn't in Durham it's in Tyne and Wear', several people told her it's in Sunderland but she wouldn't have it and deleted the replies, a year later she said Seaburn is a town near Sunderland, again she gets corrected but just deletes the comments. The latest ones she says Seaburn near Sunderland and several people (a few of us on here as well) point this out and comments are deleted. Just pure arrogance .

Must be a mag running the account, bitter as some are. Any other person who made the genuine error would surely be grateful to be corrected and not delete comments. Probably one of those mags from Gosforth or Ponteland in Northumberland near Newcastle.

Tell her it's now become part of Newcastle. See what she does.

Not sure she must get a buzz of the power of being an admin though

I think she's arrogant mind, she won't accept what the people are saying who actually live in the places she's going to. Some of her replies yesterday man it was like 'the information is good enough' but she's done it for years and still not changed it.
