Dont dress flashy, and dont carry anything you aren't prepared to be stolen would be my advice.

If you're in to hiking, climb Dois Irmaus for the best view over copacabana

Been a few times, never got mugged but when out on the bikes with some Brazilian mates I was advised to keep my mouth shut if we got stopped by the police because if they realised I was a foreigner they would fine me for every penny I had.
