Referee comes out

It shouldn't need to be but very brave of him. Hopefully the first of many.
Ridiculous in 2021 that it needs to be such a big deal.

It's funny how people claim no fuss is made over footballers being straight, but given that we know what half of their girlfriends look like, I'd strongly disagree.

In a sane world, why the fuck would I be able to recognise Wayne Rooney or Jamie Vardy or Peter Crouch's partner? They are of a complete irrelevance to me. (Although I've been in the same room as Abbey Clancy and she seemed like a nice, down-to-earth person)

In ten years time it wont even be news imo.Females running the lines and reffing top games is normal now as well.

You are right but sports such as football and boxing are full of role models for the next generation to follow. The more sporting heroes come out, the more normal it will be seen. It is important that high profile names in sport announce it to continue the cultural shift. Unfortunately a minority still see the LGBT community in a bad light. There will no doubt be abuse that follows for the first that do in football. I’m not surprised none have yet as it’s a short career and all about building a brand.

We still have some way to go, but it is light years away from where it was even 10 year ago.

The game has moved on since Graham Le Saux was outed by the press and suffered a torrent of abuse by the fans. For him there wasn't the same legal protection as there is now. Its good that people feel it is safe to come out. It certainly helped Nigel Owens - the fantastic rugby referee whose decision, apart from a few bigots, was universally accepted by the rugby fraternity. IMHO, like racism, it'll take many years for sex discrimination to become a thing of the past.

And Le Saux was straight. But apparently being a footballer who read the Guardian and was educated made him gay.

Works out to about 2,760 players. It was once quoted that 10% of each sex is probably gay.
276 players.
Tough ask for them all to come out, but if they knew most of us watching don't give a shit, and would not abuse them, it would make their decision easier.
This, either gay people are put off becoming footballers so it is far far lower than the average, or 276 people feel they have to hide what to them is an important part of their life and who they are while also not being something we should really care about. Either way that is wrong.

It would be good if some people in the more macho roles came out. Too many people think that gay=camp, weepy and delicate, rather than gay=just like everyone else but with a different sexual preference to the majority.

Wasn't even gay

That's initially a funny point, but thinking more seriously, it's a really important one.
I think the overall message here is that the actions of our dear neighbours up the road involvement with the Saudis, may create situations that they never even considered.
