Referee comes out

I think we're creating a higher pressure situation for that first footballer to come out, if he actually does exist. The media are desperate for it. I don't think any player needs that shit, and nobody really cares who they're shagging.
I'd be amazed if he doesn't exist, but you are probably right about the extra pressure. Never looked at it that way.

Left back was a problem position for us for years until Ashley Cole came along.

I didn't rate Le Saux very highly at all. And he's always come across as a pain in the arse when he's on telly, including that 'woe is me, I'm not gay but I read newspapers' thing he did. It's easy to see why players wouldn't get along with him, and it's nothing to do with how clever he thinks he is.
Check out this page in the Jersey Sport Hall of Fame. A great read about the man and also a brilliant video of his goal against Brazil recreating it at the new wembley

Good on him, does anyone care, honestly? It's amazing more haven't, but then it's sad some feel they need to.

Bets on him being fast tracked to the PL?

You couldn't write that though, but fair play to him on having the courage to come out. Makes no odds to me, whatever makes someone happy should not cause another to be offended.
It is rather unfortunate that that is his name, under the circumstances.

The game has moved on since Graham Le Saux was outed by the press and suffered a torrent of abuse by the fans. For him there wasn't the same legal protection as there is now. Its good that people feel it is safe to come out. It certainly helped Nigel Owens - the fantastic rugby referee whose decision, apart from a few bigots, was universally accepted by the rugby fraternity. IMHO, like racism, it'll take many years for sex discrimination to become a thing of the past.

He's married to a female ?

Works out to about 2,760 players. It was once quoted that 10% of each sex is probably gay.
276 players.
Tough ask for them all to come out, but if they knew most of us watching don't give a shit, and would not abuse them, it would make their decision easier.
That 10% figure is based on Alfred Kinsey's work in US prisons, and isn't considered very reliable.

In 2019, The Office for National Statistics put the figure at 2.7%. There's also the question of whether you consider someone who has at one stage in the past had some sort of homosexual experience (however you might define it), but is predominately heterosexual, to be gay (Kinsey I think did), whereas most people might not say that.

I imagine the biggest reason no footballer will want to identify as gay is because they'd be endlessly pursued by the media being asked to talk about it. And how many footballers ever want to talk to the media about their sex lives?
