Rafa Benitez set off for Newcastle this morning but had to turn back - still feeling the effects of an op to clean out an old hernia wound.

I'm writing an open get well soon card and sending it to the chron

Team A finished on 38 points in 17th position
Team B finsihed on 32 points in 18th position

Team A could have afforded to stay up on 33 points.

But the minimum amount of points needed by team B to stay up was actually 39 (not allowing for a goal difference decision).

Amazed you still haven't got it.

But that's a hypothetical meaning the team in 18th don't finish in 18th. We were talking about what actually happened

Sunderland finish in 17th on 39 points.
Newcastle finish in 18th on 37 points.

Sunderland could have finished on 38 points and stayed up.
Newcastle could have finished on 38 points and still have won relegation.

The minimum number of points for Newcastle to stay up was 40.

Hypothetically. But the way the table actually finished, 38 points kept you up.
