He was appointed in March and had no involvement in any transfers. We were unbeaten in the last 6 games. We were relegated because of what happened before he came although the games at Norwich and Villa were desparately disappointing.
Your result against Chelsea was bizarre and Everton should have been fined for their non performance.
Let's see how our 2 clubs do this year, par performance for me would be for us just to stop up and you to finish 8-10th.
He'd hit the roof cos he's a Spurs fanI think on Sunday we will get comfortably beaten by Spurs. Runners up last season, vs newly promoted team that hasn't done much strengthening. Nailed on Spurs win.
Could even be so soundly beaten that we are bottom of the league after the first weekend.
If we somehow manage to win, and play well, how will Ashley react? I think that would strengthen his case for not signing more players. Nee danger of us winning though.
potentially struggling prem team vs a decent championship one - its not a bad draw tbh. Obviously Blackburn vs Burnley is better.Just had a Mag text me saying "Newcastle- Forest is the stand out tie of the round"![]()

That was a typo. I meant Newcastle spent money to stay up and Rafa failed, I didn't mean that Rafa spent the money himself.
Who was in charge for the derby at SJP in March 2016? Lets not forget, Rafa had matches against Villa, Norwich and Sunderland (all teams around them) if you had won any of those 3 games you would have survived. He failed to win any of them.
I don't buy this bollocks that "It was all McClaren's fault" and "Rafa had no chance" look at some of the managers that have kept us up Paolo Di Canio, Gus Poyet, Dick Advocaat. It's not impossible or too much for a manager to come in and save a team from relegation. Face facts, he had enough time to keep youse up and he didn't/
Newcastle beat Spurs away and then Liverpool at home in successive games before christmas, probably kept McLaren in his post for a fair while longer than he should have been. The run of results after these games was catastrophic. One season is different to the next though. Different circumstances, teams around you performing differently. In 15/16 Arsenal got 71 points and finished 2nd. In 16/17 they got 75 and finished 5th.
In the season Benitez took over he had 10 games to turn it round. He failed to prevent a nailed on relegation under McClaren. The team was averaging 0.89 points per game under McClaren, under Benitez it finished with 1.2ppg.
He clearly improved things but it took too long for the improvements to have an effect. Had the board appointed him before the Bournemouth game he'd have likely kept us up. It is what it is. We went down under McClaren and Benitez, then got promoted, and now here we are.

Don't think it was nailed on at all. The difference between 0.9 points a game and 1.2 game is nothing at all over 10 games, it's 3 points. It's hardly water into wine stuff.
Like I said, Benitez had ample opportunity to get points against Sunderland, Norwich or Villa. There were 9 points there and he only got 2.
As you say, you are here now. Would be interesting to see how he would do over the next season. I have a feeling though that Rafa can see the writing is on the wall. He's only a decent manager not amazing and with a poor squad, no money and a board that doesn't back him - he'll jump ship before things get tough

What did everton and chelsea have to play for when you's played them?Yes but surely you shouldn't consider the final nonentity of a game between a demoralised Spurs who had just lost the league and had no interest in playing that Sunday, and an already relegated Newcastle. If you take Benitez's points per game for relevant matches where there was something to play for his ppg was 1.1. Not much of an improvement really and four of those games were against the worst teams in the league (Palace,Norwich,Sunderland,Villa). I can't understand why most Newcastle fans don't realise or admit that Benitez did a really poor job for Newcastle in those nine games.
both "European champions" with one of them qualifying the right way and proving it wasnt a flukeJust had a Mag text me saying "Newcastle- Forest is the stand out tie of the round"![]()

Whilst you're more or less spot on in what you're saying, a win against villa, instead of a draw would still have seen them relegated on goal difference.
