Prospective England openers

Eh?

Burns hasnt doen that, thats the exact point.

Because Burns has been int he side 3 years and not done very well

he hasnt worked hard enough, I have no idea what sort of point you are trying to make here, I suggest you listen to Mark Butcher on this, he is spot on

Sibley has tried to work on it immediately after his first bad spell, its taken Burns over 3 years, thats the point. All while he was getting paid 3 times what Mark Wood and Jonny Bairstow were.
The fact is Burns was batting for England and averaging 35+ prior to the India including an Ashes series where he averaged 40 and scored a hundred. He was doing well with a quirky technique as many players have done before him. Sibley and Burns then had a terrible year and a half but we’re playing test cricket incessantly until they wre both dropped. It’s only now that either of them have had the chance to make fundamental changes and other than comments about working at their game there’s nothing to suggest either of them are making those sort of changes. You just single Burns out when in fact Sibley, Crawley and Pope all have techical issues where their bat is coming down from an angle and none of them seem to bothered about making meaningful change.

No he wasn,t hes 31 and averages just over 30

One of the best paid cricketers in england and did not alter his technique once despite such a poor record.

I single Burns out because he has been the team a f***ing long time, much longer than all of them and was supposed to be a senior player

its lazy, arrogant and incompetent

no wonder he has been dropped.

Took him over 3 years to make adjustments to his technique, very poor by him.

What a weird perspective you're putting on this. Did you expect him to completely change his technique while under the massive pressure of being a opening batsman in an underperforming England test team?

He clearly will have been working on his game but you're having a go because he didn't totally remodel the technique that got him into the England team in the first place and got him some level of success.

‘No he’s wasn’t’ what? Averaging over 35? Scoring an Ashes 100? Averaging 40 in that Ashes series? Playing test cricket incessantly for 15-18 months during which time he was supposed to be making fundamental changes to his technique that had previously served him well. Which bit?

He should have made tweeks yeah, as all good players do,

He hadnt hd sucssess, he is 31 and averages just over 30

He felt that was good enough and felt he didnt have to do any work

utterly bizarre that people on here think a bloke getting paid 6 figures is acceptable to do that

As Nasser and Butch said, getting out the same way and doing nothing about is unacceptable

Neither, he averages just over 30

you cant just pick and choose what stats you want

Sibley averaged 37 before India, you leave that out of your selective stats I see.

The fact you think players shouldnt be trying to improve and make changes when bowlers work them out is utterly utterly mad

its literally his job to do that

Its wy he was dropped during our 2 biggest series in cricket, not good enough, and just lazy.

And you know he hasn't made any tweaks at all do you? Have you studied his technique in detail over his time in the England team enough to say 100% that he hasn't made any changes at all?

There's absolutely no way he will not have been working on his game and trying to overcome the exposed shortcomings in his game. No way at all.

Yes, his technique was 100% identical in his first test to his last, he has even talked about that

watch him bat for Surrey this week and he has mate little changes.

Its just poor poor poor.

I am sure he hit plenty of balls in the net, but thats not the same as accepting you arent doing well, the reality is he was happy with how he was doing. no wonder he ended up failing.

shouldnt have took him 3 years for the penny to drop like.

I suggest you listen to Butcher on wisden cricket pod, he talks at length about this and I agree with every word

All to play for with no-one nailing these positions down definitely in the winter.

I don’t leave anything out when Sibley was averaging 37 and Burns averaging 35 and getting 100 against Hazkewood, Cummins and Starc he was doing well in test cricket. Him averaging 31 now and Sibley less than that shows that they have been worked out. In the period when both of them have failed they haven’t had the opportunity to make the changes needed because it has been test match after test match, bubble after bubble. They have now had the chance to make changes but don’t expect either of them to be back playing for England with a classical openers stance. If people are disagreeing with you over this there’s a good reason why.

I noticed he wasn’t playing but wasn’t sure why.

I haven't (and am not going to) compare his technique from first innings to last but I very much doubt they will be 100% identical. There'd likely be stuff in there that I wouldn't spot anyway without being told.

If/when he plays test cricket again, his technique will be largely similar to the untrained eye. There's no way he'll completely remodel and come back with a "classical" technique.

Sibley has never played Ashes cricket unlike some others, not one ball, his average would be lot less if he had, as the Aussies bowlers in both the last 2 series home and away have been simply brilliant, that’s not up for debate they have bowled brilliantly,

Sibley started well in test cricket but has now been clearly found out, doesn’t rotate the strike, has very very limited shots for a supposedly top player, teams will just restrict his scoring and that in turn will just put more pressure on the other batsman in the team imo.

Going back to him would be a negative move imo, but may get another chance due to other viable options.

Burns performances in the home ashes against brilliant bowlers was very good but few years gone by now and he has got worse.

However imo if had to choose between them both would always go Burns over Sibley.

Fair does lads

I can’t agree

I don’t think he accepted his flaws and worked on them

Looks like he is trying to now and if it works it should be considered

All about opinions I guess

I’m interested to see how Yates gets on. I’d really like to see him tried at Test level, I have a feeling his game would stand up, based on not much more than a hunch admittedly, but I want to see for sure.

You’ve missed out on who is supposedly closer than all them which is Haines

Fair enough. It wasn't really meant as a definitive list more a thread for people to add to. I have to admit though I did notice Haines got a few in the first innings but didn't really know he was a serious candidate.

Aye him and Yates the young ones being hyped up

Its worth noting Rob Key tweeted about him too mind just this week, considering what job he is after...
