Proper Premier League

Totally disregarding 100 years of history! The super league had the same mindset.
Its not that deep mate.

I went along with the title of the thread and based my selections on Premier League only.

I'm not old enough to remember anything before the mid to late 90s.

Do you want me to put Huddersfield in there because they were successful in the 1920s even though they've only spent 2 years in the Premier League in my lifetime?

I’m sure everyone has a different idea of who “should” be in the top flight. My list is based on history, the era I grew up in, and support,

Sunderland
Man Utd
Liverpool
Arsenal
Man City
Spurs
Aston Villa
Everton
Chelsea
Leeds
Sheffield Wednesday
Nottingham Forest
WBA
Norwich
Wolves
QPR
West Ham

Derby County
Blackburn Rovers
Newcastle

What would yours be? 7 of mine aren’t currently in the top flight.
I disagree with those three, they have never won the league and QPR and Norwich have also never won the FA Cup.

These are the twenty teams that have spent the longest in the top flight up to the end of last season, in order of the length of their stay:

01. EVERTON
02. ASTON VILLA
03. LIVERPOOL
04. ARSENAL
05. MANCHESTER UNITED
06. MANCHESTER CITY
07. NEWCASTLE UNITED
08. TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR
09. CHELSEA
10. SUNDERLAND
11. WEST BROMWICH ALBION
12. BOLTON WANDERERS
13. BLACKBURN ROVERS
14. WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS
15. SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY
16. WEST HAM UNITED
17. DERBY COUNTY
18. SHEFFIELD UNITED
19. STOKE CITY
20. MIDDLESBROUGH

It's a decent starting point, though obviously favours teams that were successful or established in the early days of football, while some that have been more regular top flight teams or more successful over the last 50 years or so (eg Leicester, Leeds, Forest, Southampton) are nowhere to be seen. There is no perfect answer, obviously, and any system you choose to provide weighting to different factors (eg number of seasons, trophies, attendances, gravy stain intensity) would obviously involve a lot of bias.

Genuinely surprised to see the Smogs nip in there at 20. There's a few I'd have guessed ahead of them.

Cheers - yeah - tight between Boro, Burnley, Forest and Brum.

As an aside (would be a decent pub question), from looking at that site, I have a quick question for you all (no cheating now):

How many of next season's Championship teams have never played in the English top flight, and can you name them?
