Patrick Roberts to Birmingham compendium

Absolutely Old boy no true townie would use such an expression.

I believe that its use was/is more commonly found in the old coal mining settlements that are to the west of Sunderland but not quite in the depths of the West Durham coal field . Places like Hetton-le-Hole and Shiney Row approximately in the band that runs north /south just to the east of the A1M.

That's always been may take on it . It definitely Pitmatic. Anyone else got a view on it?
Dinnnaaarrhhh marra.

Definitely part of the pitmatic telt by owl gadgees when I was a lad!

Yes he struggled last season

No he didnt
Talbi and Mundle can both play there too. Mundle was awful on the left wing when he first came. He literally passed it square inside every time. Looked extremely limited and stilted. He looked quite dangerous on the right. Then out of the blue he started to perform very well on the left. It doesn't mean he can no longer play on the right. He could definitely play right wing back because he's the best tackling winger we have alongside Le Fee.

Haway then, what was he like? Played the full 90 I noticed.

Mundle was awful when he first came everywhere.pretty poor down the right side as well. Kept getting himself into situations where he got frustrated and was wanting to fight fullbacks. It probably wasn't the best time to judge but he wasn't good.

By his own admission cutting in from the left is his game - and that was beginning to get slightly less effective before injury as teams double up and blocked him off.

My memory is his beating a few players on the right wing but hardly ever going on the outside on the left on his wrong foot.

He's obviously got his confidence now and on paper he's out biggest goal threat from out wide. He has an excellent shot and is very much in the Jack Clarke mold. Obviously Clarke failed at a higher level but the genius Ipswich manager never played to his strengths.

If he’d been injured rather than out on loan then he’d have definitely been the better option.

Our players seem to get better in the fans heads the longer they’re out for.

Pat was great for us during our journey from league one, and had some significant contributions in important play off games. I wish him well apart from if he ever plays against us.

However, the people in charge of steering the ship, felt we needed to strengthen in his position, and given we have at least 19 points already before the end of November, I can't really question their decision!

Roberts is a skilfull footballer. The PL is a frighteningly high standard. He isn't a PL footballer. In days gone by, before foreign players made up the majority of teams, he would have been an automatic pick for most clubs in the old First Division. Roberts had a brilliant attitude and brilliant workmate, always tracking back to cover defensively. He sometimes held the ball too long, sometimes tried one trick too many but, quite often, brightened up a drab EFL afternoon.

I very much doubt that Roberts would have been in the position Talbi was to get the goal v Chelsea, and even if he was, he would have collected it and tried to dribble around the 2 Chelsea players.

Loved the lad when he was here, but as a club, we're a level above him now.
He certainly wouldn't have finished that chance.

I like Roberts and really enjoyed watching him for the most part over the years he was here, but let's be honest, he'll be 28 in a couple of months and has never really played at a level higher than the Championship.

There's a reason for that. Not many players these days get to that age and make the amount of appearances he has without getting a move to a higher level if good enough.

He'd be nowhere near getting minutes here.

At the end of the day, he's playing his football elsewhere. He's played his part and has moved on. Get behind the lads that are here.

I say that as a fully paid up member of the Paddy Roberts fanclub.

We're doing well. Enjoy it.

He had another really good game against WBA much like the last few. Top player who could and should be given his chance back here.
How can you describe a player who has spent the vast majority of his playing career outside top flights as a 'top player'?

For me, the reason he never really went to the top level is due to his decision-making. He has all the talent in the world but takes an extra touch when the top players get their heads-up and make the pass and make the run or have the shot early.
