To be fair to him, he’s only 21. And he scored 2 fifties in 3 tests in India

He’s clearly having a bad time but at least he seems to have a technique for test matches

There are numerous occasions when County sides have beaten full strength touring sides. The 2009 Durham was a strong outfit by any County standards and given conditions at the Riverside are generally alien to touring sides history suggests they'd have a very good chance of being victorious.
As to Onions only he himself knows whether his comments were intended to be provocative. As an experienced cricketer, however, he would know that he should be guarded in his comments for fear of being misinterpreted unless of course, he was intending being provocative. He clearly has a grievance which is understandable.

That Durham county side was no where near the quality of a main tier test team, it’s ridiculous to suggest otherwise!!

A technique against spin and when the ball isn't swinging or seaming perhaps. He has shown he has good temperament but sub continent pitches are not where he would be playing 80% of his test cricket.
