Once Upon a Time in Iraq

I watched that episode this morning. I believe Sassman was a good man, with good intentions but he obviously was a poor military man as he couldn't handle the loss of one colleague.
No way man the bloke was looking for revenge all the time. He should never have been in that position in the first place. He had no idea what he was doing and had zero sympathy for the civilians of Iraq.

I'm not disputing what you're saying in any way. I'm saying West Point, the paragon of American military excellence and officer training obviously teaches them nothing about conflict, or honour.

It's tremendous viewing. And shows what an absolute shit show it all was.
Still is by the sounds of things. Just not topical so not hitting headlines. Arab kills Arab no one cares.
Watched another two this evening.

Nee wonder the poor fuckers hate America. Absolutely disgraceful. And clueless.

Loved Saddam. Still telling them to fuck themselves just before he dropped. Also told the American lad the wests leaders were shit bags and were opening a massive can of worms.
Was a little like nuremberg that ep but everything he said was true. Regime change can be worst thing. This may have stopped us going into Iran thankfully. Influencing leaders ti change slowly in this instance is likely the best of bad options. What happened in Iraq is criminal.

Looking at their troops it gave me impression they train on cod all that yeyhah hung ho stuff. Shooting everywhere wasting ammo. If thry'd just funded our army we could have shown them how to keep peace. Best in the world our boys. Imo

All five episodes are pretty compulsive viewing, it's all just so wholly depressing knowing as we do that each one is going to outdo the last in terms of how bad it gets.

What I loved about it was story after story from a wide perspective of viewpoints from some great characters, giving us a pretty complete picture of what was going on.

Amazing really.

What I thought set him apart though is they deliberately sent him up to Samara because of their reputation. The bloke stated back then and in the interviews on the show he fought aggression with controlled aggression but think back to the time and US Friendly fire killings were a running joke even in this country. It was not exactly controlled aggression and even in that show there was that cameraman that said he was shot with phosphorus. That army were a f***ing mess and absolutely shite. All the gear and no idea. Id be very surprised if they’re thick enough to go into somewhere else and bring down a government.

We can now add Libya to the list of countries we've had a hand in f***ing up.

Civil war since someone pocked Gadaffi's Arse with a stick and about to kick reet off by the looks of it.
Have you ever read this theory on the subject?

He was a Proper f***ing idiot him. Got passed around like a rent boy. Took the rap for Lockerbie for Assad’s Father then got invited to speak at the UN years later. He was just a puppet baddie for us and the yanks him.

Found the third ep hard viewing, on behalf of both the young American Marine who died so the journo could get a photo, and the Iraqi boy who was injured. Great series nonetheless.

Did you think the cameraman was out of order for wanting that shot?

I didn’t. I think it must have been pretty common for them to use mosques as cover and it is a ridiculous rule Of war anyway imo. Don’t know the answer to this but am I right in thinking if they could have proven this to be the case the yanks could have just blown up any mosque they saw fit?

I tread carefully with Adam Curtis but he's certainly worth the time to read or watch. Gaddafi was a strange sob though. Seemed consumed by his idea of A Third Way which seemed to end up like Saddam's Baathist based rule to me, based on a mix socialism and nationalism. But yeah, strange if that version is true and he did take the rap.

The young un went in unfortunate circumstances but he was into killing animals as a sport so....

I don't either, and you're correct in that being the result if they got the shot. It's why the bloke in charge of the command okayed it. They wanted the image to be shown everywhere so they could say Mosques are no longer off limits.

No. It did make operational sense but the rule is there because in times of invasion religious people do congregate in churches. I thought the photographer was a tad harsh on himself...but still. harsh lesson of war.

The one that got to me was at the end of the first episode was the poor Bedouin who felt safer in the desert than being shelled, took off with his family and two helicopters opened up on them.

No wonder there were grievances.

If you watch through or read a lot of articles at the time the blame was firmly on Hafez Assad. It did indeed change a few weeks later. I always thought it was odd too that Blair met Assad JNR in 2001 over Israel, got fucked off and then the following year all of a sudden Syria was part of Bush Axis of evil speech. The Yanks were using us to see who was on side over Israel and Iraq. Syria would have been a perfect place to attack Iraq from. Let’s face it the yanks just want land in the Middle East and we have a better chance of getting them it because they have burned their bridges.

Shame no one reads a history book before doing these things. Cameron went storming into Libya with a similar result

I’m a tad embarrassed to say but in the run up to it all aged 20 I got caught up in the whole invasion of Iraq thing and was behind it. I was right into Blair and felt like he could be trusted. I was gutted about 9/11 and couldn’t see how we could not get into Afghanistan and Iraq. Wasn’t long after it fell the penny started to drop that we’d all been made fools of mind.

Do you have an example of when this form of political war was used though before this? Essentially a one man bad guy story whereby he was supposedly responsible for events which led to it rather than the truth of a huge web of complex political fuckups across the globe?

Another book on this by Patrick Cockburn worth reading is The Occupation: War and Resistance In Iraq. His column in the Independent/The i, about the Middle east and Northern Ireland too. is always well worth a read

Biggest mistake was getting rid of the infrastructure like Police etc when they invaded.
Its like in this country when theres civil unrest people call for the army to sort things out. Army's can't Police civilian population.

The problem was with them I think a lot of them ran because they’d been on the take when Saddam was there much like the army. That army had to be dissolved. Someone has already said if they’d have had a plan in advance on what to do once he was gone maybe it could have worked. Fact is they just seen any type of trouble as terrorism and didn’t try to understand the sectarianism between the locals and how that ended up developing. Saying that even that seemed to take the locals by surprise if this show was to be believed.

That kid was funny telling the tale of the America's bright idea getting rid of anyone in Saddam's Baathist party. It was kind of like having your communist card under Stalin. It came with any half decent job.
