The coverage just proves how important it is to have a free and strong press. It's this sort of story where something like The Athletic really falls down. Caulkin has gone from the (comparatively) diverse audience of the Times, to basically being reliant on online Newcastle fans to read his articles, listen to his podcasts and justify his job by paying for a subscription. Online football fans are very sensitive (all of us, not just them), so there's no way they're going to pay for a subscription where their club writer does anything but reaffirm their view of their club. Basically, a paid, well-connected fanzine writer.

It is of no surprise to me that the only top journalists to go against the club's own narrative have been those who are backed by big media operations and have no real need to keep those running the club happy.

Are you on Twitter? Have you looked at the responses to Keith Downie's 'generally nice people' tweet and in particular the replies to SAFC fans questioning that statement?
I'll set aside the replies to SAFC fans, because that's tribalism. Any criticism from your fanbase will be viewed first and foremost as jealousy and rivalry. Rightly or wrongly, that is the nature of the beast.

Twitter is awash with bad opinions and false bravado. I look at the results of the Athletic, the conversations I've had with fans, the vox pops, the lads who've been interviewed.

It's wrong to try and paint Newcastle fans as any different to fans of other clubs. The average Newcastle fan is reacting in exactly the same way as would the average Leeds fan, or Villa fan, or whomever.

I repeat what I've said, how Newcastle fans can do themselves proud is by not abetting the sportwashing and by amplifying the voices of those who speak of the atrocities carried out in KSA.

Sorry but this is utter bollocks, the day Ellis Short became the majority shareholder of Sunderland it barely raised a headline in the local press let alone nationally.
Sunderland supporters were aware but the realities were that no one knew who he was, but due to the 2007/2008 financial credit crisis it was known that Drumaville were in all sorts of bother due to the amount of money certain members of that consortium had tied up in property which was quickly losing value.
Football ownership has always been a topic of concern for supporters but it only really gathered pace when Roman Abramovich purchased Chelsea and then Abu Dhabi United purchased Man City. Before those takeovers, City, Chelsea, Sunderland, Newcastle, Villa and a whole raft of similar sized clubs were level pegging (maybe not Chelsea who had started to rise under Matthew Harding) but you lot always thought that you deserved more. You've always had an air of self entitlement due to the smoke Sky blew up your arses during the early 90's despite never winning a thing. Well, you have that investment you were craving but f***ing hell it has come at some price. Give me League one football over having those fuckers in charge of my club any day of the week
Ok, so you weren't happy and riding along on the crest of a wave. Ok no problem.
