Are we (or any other fans) that different? We all want to improve, progress and have something to shout about.
I first started going to matches in our 1987 division 3 spell. Following that we were an average 2nd division side with a brief spell in the top flight. Reid came in and changed that, we got the two 7th place finishes, were in a position to kick on and then we got really pissed off with Reid as he seemed to dismantle that quality attacking squad for a slower more defensive one.We slid down the table and wanted him out. I think it was Chaplains I was in watching Reid's last match at the mags place and even at the team line up, there was a groan and a feeling that we deserved better because we had a hint of being a European contender. We were not looking at where we were 5 years ago. What is the point of progressing if you are all happy to go back to being the 35th best team because you had a couple of memories of being 7th?
Fast forward a good few years and we were frustrated at being a last minute pull out of the relegation pack team and wanted someone to change that. Not quite in the way Moyes did, but we were looking at the next few notches up the league table and demanding we got the playing staff to get us there.
They had a taste of a higher and longer level of success (or at least elevation) and want it back. You are right that you can't just bankroll a club and I do think the likes of Chelsea and Man City have fucked up the entire football pyramid. But if we were in their position would we not be looking at the likes of West Ham, Brentford, Brighton, Leicester and Aston Villa saying we should be able to compete with them? No disrespect to Brentford but is it not a travesty that we are having our 4th season in League 1, while they are mid-table Premier League with 16k crowds.
If you don't want to progress year on year, you may as well not bother.
