He had a 29.6% win percentage when he managed us. He can moan about his Waaallsend roots and “10th y’knarr” all he wants, 29.6% in the Premier League is f*cking minging.

This is the crux of the problem. Steve Bruce was a dead man walking from day one. They want an Arab or oligarch owner and a charismatic foreign manager who wears expensive suits. They'll settle for nothing less than buying their way to the top, like they did 25 years ago.

But what they fail to grasp, is that could just as easy happen at any club. And I dare say their case for preference is diminished by their conduct.

They hate me saying this but it's absolutely true. Newcastle are roughly where they should be in the hierarchy, and both Steve Bruce and Mike Ashley are doing reasonably OK.
*bought their way to second

Triple whammy of the 6 in a row, us relegating them then the takeover. They'll never recover.
That day on here was amazingly amazing! Fond memories, like of the best party you ever went to and will never forget. Oh how we gloated, drank and cried tears of joy and laughter, as they cried a river, with tracks of their tears, rolling down gravy stained tops.

Amazing day, amazing night, the memories are golden!! :)

Im just not sure at what point of their history shows they should have divine right to be a contender for anything?

Can't stand this saying of "lack of ambition", it's ghastly, what it actually means is the owner isn't lumping debt on the club or he isn't personally bankrolling it to the tune of hundreds of millions of pounds.
Are we (or any other fans) that different? We all want to improve, progress and have something to shout about.

I first started going to matches in our 1987 division 3 spell. Following that we were an average 2nd division side with a brief spell in the top flight. Reid came in and changed that, we got the two 7th place finishes, were in a position to kick on and then we got really pissed off with Reid as he seemed to dismantle that quality attacking squad for a slower more defensive one.We slid down the table and wanted him out. I think it was Chaplains I was in watching Reid's last match at the mags place and even at the team line up, there was a groan and a feeling that we deserved better because we had a hint of being a European contender. We were not looking at where we were 5 years ago. What is the point of progressing if you are all happy to go back to being the 35th best team because you had a couple of memories of being 7th?

Fast forward a good few years and we were frustrated at being a last minute pull out of the relegation pack team and wanted someone to change that. Not quite in the way Moyes did, but we were looking at the next few notches up the league table and demanding we got the playing staff to get us there.

They had a taste of a higher and longer level of success (or at least elevation) and want it back. You are right that you can't just bankroll a club and I do think the likes of Chelsea and Man City have fucked up the entire football pyramid. But if we were in their position would we not be looking at the likes of West Ham, Brentford, Brighton, Leicester and Aston Villa saying we should be able to compete with them? No disrespect to Brentford but is it not a travesty that we are having our 4th season in League 1, while they are mid-table Premier League with 16k crowds.

If you don't want to progress year on year, you may as well not bother.

Shearer has a short memory, when he was a boy (pre-1992) they were a similar husk of a club with less ambition...

You’d think he’d remember, seeing as he fucked them off to go and play for Southampton instead. Southampton were consistently near the top of division 1 at the time, while the mags were doing nothing in division 2.

Got to be a chance that this is Bruce’s last job? He’s in his 60s now, and isn’t exactly a picture of health.

He’s somehow been employed almost continuously for 21 years, and at this point he’s clearly never going to kick on and be a top manager. Never looks like he’s remotely enjoying it, and he has no particular style he wants to impose on his team.

I honestly can’t see what keeps him going aside from the prospect of a few million quid when he gets sacked, whenever that is. Unfortunately for him, he seems to be working for the one Premier League owner who won’t pull the trigger!
