Going over old ground here but no one denies Newcastle have given you the chance to go on a lot of European mini-breaks. But the end result is zero European trophies, since 1969, not even a final just one semi-final in 2004 where you were swapped to one side by Drogba for Marseille.

The two games you mentioned above gave you the trip away but even the Newcastle fans weren't arsed about it with 28,400 at the home game v Alkmaar.

Who's this Fitzgerald knacker? Their desire to use us to give themselves some weird feeling of superiority is playground stuff. As the failed saudi takeover showed the vast bulk of their support is just interested in winning stuff.

Yet they never do win stuff. And it kills them. But grown adults can still go on their local rivals message board and boast about the size of support and few European trips genuinely thinking we give a shit.

That's incorrect that those trips were as a result of winning it.
We were presented with that certificate before the Alkmaar game. Won it by being the team who progressed furthest via entering through the intertoto. We played one Intertoto tie, entering in the 3rd round, which we won so progressed to the UEFA cup qualifying rounds.
Of all the teams that got into the UEFA cup from the Intertoto that season, we made it to the last 16 and won it because of that.

Potentially we could've got to the final and lost to another intertoto entrant which would've meant we didn't win it. Daft "competition" but a route into Europe nonetheless and certainly worth taking part in.
