Northern trains

On at Seaton 11:40.

Pretty full standing only.

Horden & Seaham little chance of getting on this train looking at crowd in Hartlepool

Surprise only 2 carriages
Didn't see anyone get on at Horden.
Got on the same train at Hartlepool, it was absolutely horrendous... we were just sardines squashed in.... a heaving smelly mess of humanity.
If there had been an accident the casualties would have been a record for any UK railway companies.

I'm sure the protocols were pushed to one side by conductor to try and appease the travelling public. Gross overcrowding.

It is just not good enough Northern Rail yet again ...
For almost 60 years I've been following Sunderland - that was the worst train journey over that short distance from Hartlepool to Sunderland ever.

Can Northern Rail explain why if there is an hourly service instead of two train per hour that the train has just two carriages... what happened to the rail stock which was the being not used.
You don't need another drivers as two carriages trains simply become four.
So the usual excuse of no railway stock falls flat they have the carriages as the timing was one train service per hour instead of two.
It was just more evidence that they don't give a damn about the travelling public.

They are so inefficient that at Hartlepool the advertised train on the stations' board said... for the 11. 46 that it had 3 carriages!!! [do they exist! does that even exist] and then if you are going to Sunderland please be in the first two carriages as the platform is short!!!!!!
How can they say that?
They are fools who have no respect for the travelling public's needs or intelligence.

Really great day once we got to Sunderland.... even though Northern Rail tried their best to ruin the day on that outward journey. Rant over.

Its not a short platform, its just the gap is massive compared to the one at Newcastle

Was ridiculous on way up , crammed in and absolutely sweltering .

Was it bad coming back after match , we Didn’t even try it on way back just got an uber back cos didn’t fancy that again

Absolutely ridiculous they can’t put more carriages or trains on . Not like they didn’t know well in advance radio 1 weekend and match was on so could have planned for it

Don't normally get the train but got the 20:08 Northern home yesterday. Departed 20 minutes late as was held up at Brockley Whins then the two carriages were so squashed in that the guard couldn't get on and had her head in her hands at one point.

Surely northern trains should put another one on next season idiots mind be plenty money to be made.

Probably take an accident before they do anything

I was on the same train. Poor lass had a tough gig.

Not her fault only two carriages.

This is the type of thing that Tom Burwell and SAFC, and to a lesser extent RAWA should be bang in the middle of.

Unfortunately, sorting it out wouldn't generate any extra income for the club so they won't be interested

Lad from our group who lives in Horden couldn’t get on yesterday, had to get a lift up. Said it was a mix on the platform of match goers and people off to the Big Weekend. Mental they can’t put more on when there is not one but two major events in the city.

They clearly aren't either insentivised or penalised, or else they'd be maximising profits with more carriages.

Maybe appeal/complain to these

This speaks volumes:

Northern Trains is heavily subsidised. Because passenger ticket revenue does not cover the cost of running the extensive network across the North of England, the government steps in with substantial financial support. [ ]
The setup is highly dependent on state support for a few key reasons:
  • State-Owned Operation: Northern is entirely owned by the Department for Transport (DfT) through DfT OLR Holdings. Because it is publicly owned, any financial shortfalls are covered directly by the taxpayer.
  • Scale of Subsidies: Historically, Northern has required some of the highest subsidies per passenger mile of any rail franchise in the UK. In recent financial years, the operator has required hundreds of millions of pounds in government support to break even and maintain services.
  • Broader Economic Impact: The government views this subsidy as a vital investment. Economic studies have highlighted that these subsidies generate significant regional growth, supporting tens of thousands of jobs and generating billions of pounds in wider welfare and economic benefits

Mate I normally get in at horden so you can imagine how insane it is every bloody game trying to get on there. It’s beyond silly.

Standing room only, on our 2 carriage Northern Train at 10:46 out of H/pool, and standing room only, on the 20:08 return train (2 carriages)
couldn't give it a like as it was an horrendous journey ... and it wasn't funny so it had to a sad ..

On a normal Saturday match the Horden stop may as well not exist... beyond silly ... been the same on match days ever since it was open ... sorry to say

It would help if on a match day the trains weren’t so dangerous and packed people that hardly anyone pays as you don’t need a ticket to leave Sunderland station.

They must be losing money as the ticket inspector can't get round the carriages. Put extra ones on and increase your revenue.
Said this for years

They used to have ticket inspection at the top of the stairs checking who had a ticket those who didnt were asked where they got on from & duly paid this stopped for some reason
