UK backs struggling Nissan with £1 billion loan
The British taxpayer is to stand behind a £1 billion loan to Nissan, the struggling Japanese carmaker which operates the UK’s single largest car plant, at Sunderland in the north east of England.
UK Export Finance, the arm of the Treasury which guarantees credit to help fund exporters, has been named as a supporter of part of a £5.2 billion restructuring of the company, in reports coming out of Japan.
That UKEF is standing behind a £1 billion syndicated loan being taken out by Nissan will be seen as part of the British government’s attempts to ensure that the Sunderland plant is not a victim of the restructuring taking place at the carmaker.
The loan and UKEF’s role is one of the larger components of the fund-raising package, according to Bloomberg which first reported the news. It includes: the issuance of new debt and rollover of existing borrowings; selling the shares it owns in Renault, its French partner in what is now an unwinding alliance; the closure of plants in Japan, South Africa and Mexico on the way to shutting a total of seven of seventeen globally; and the sale and leaseback of properties including its Yokohama headquarters.
The heavily loss-making carmaker has been hobbled by poor performances in China and the US, the two largest automotive markets in the world, at the same time that it has had to invest in the energy transition of producing lower and zero emission vehicles.
The company is going through a near 20,000 redundancy programme, about 15 per cent of its global workforce. It recently reported a £3.33 billion loss for 2024.

As much as I sympathise with small businesses. The income tax hit they would take if Nissan left would be much higher than the bail outs. On top of that you'd have thousands claiming unemployment benefits.Take more than that. Lifting of Richie Pitt
