Nissan

contractual working week is 40 hours, that’s ’working week’ overtime isn’t counted as it’s extra not compulsory that’s how they get round it had this out with a manager yesterday in a skip meeting
Maybe don't take notice of your manager next time. After all, he's not on your side.

What counts as work

A working week includes:

  • job-related training
  • time spent travelling if you travel as part of your job, for example sales rep
  • working lunches, for example business lunches
  • time spent working abroad
  • paid overtime
  • unpaid overtime you’re asked to do
  • time spent on call at the workplace
  • any time that is treated as ‘working time’ under a contract
  • travel between home and work at the start and end of the working day (if you do not have a fixed place of work)

It definitely is counted, it would make the working time directive pointless if it only included your contracted hours, it would never be over 40.
Exactly right. I think he's getting mixed up with accruing holiday hours, if it's classed as sporadic overtime you don't accrue holiday hours on it. If nissan said you're working every Saturday when you're on dayshift this year, it would no longer be classed as sporadic and you'd be entitled to accrue holiday hours on it, that is why nissan only announce their overtime schedule month by month, so they don't have to give you any extra holidays.

I’ve heard a whisper they’re going to change the maintenance shift pattern , must be on a death wish as they will just leave

Are envision only making batteries for us? Or do they supply other companies?
Making batteries for other companies.
One of my mates is doing the electrics in it and he says there’s different parts to it 1 for Nissan 1 for jaguar Land Rover and then there will be another plant for elsewhere.
It’s still a long way off being complete atm though, there’s no fire alarm system complete in it yet it’s all on the 1 system and needs to be in compartments, health and safety are going to shut it down.
Something to do with where they need to work it’s full of chemicals for the batteries and they can’t isolate it safely or work above it where the fire system needs to be.

As someone who designs fire alarm systems that sounds like bollocks.

Can you give some examples of more money elsewhere and better job security?
Amazon , Siemens , Royal Mail , wind power industry . All pay better once maintenance salary cut to 3 shifts . Loads of places do , it’s only 4 shift allowance that makes the job worth it .

Amazon are on less as son works there. Don't know about the rest but how is there no job security?

i used to take the lithium solution up there in a tanker. the bit about making batteries for other manufacturers is what i was told as well.
they also reckoned that with it being that much bigger and was going to have a lot more chemicals it would have to become a comah site and comply to all the associated regulations that are needed. unless they've changed how they want the solution, the tanks were all ground operated. a lot of places have sprinkler systems that cover the tanks whilst tipping but i don't think a bit sprinkle of water would help much if they went boom.
hope it's a success as all the lads i used to deal with were spot on.

Job security is there such a thing these days in any industry. No one can predict what’s gonna happen at Nissan in the next 2,5,10 years time.
You are of course 100% correct, and there are some strong headwinds for Nissan at the moment, but the same was said to me in 1987,

That Nissan was just a trojan horse to get cars into the country and would shut soon, so I better look for another job...

To be fair there were plenty of ups and downs along the way, some of their own making like the press debacle and some not like numerous recessions and covid etc but I managed 35 years still...

I am still betting NMUK will survive in one form or another, maybe in a leaner format but hopefully it will still be there in 50 years when they are making flying EV Cars probably... 🤔
