Net spend will always have a place and be relative. If you lose £100m worth of talent, and replace with £50m worth, the likelihood is that you're in a weaker position. Note: figures used as an example and not actually linked to any particular football club.

Newcastle supporters claim they robbed the clubs blind for the likes of Sissoko and were glad to see the back of them.

Benitez, in the meantime, is making the likes of Lascelles, Shelve, Ritchie, etc look worse than they previously were.
