New Offside Rule begins testing this weekend

FIFA has chosen the Canadian Premier league to test a new offside law, one that Wegner has been pushing. The season begins this weekend.

It would change the current ruling so that:

"The new rule states that rather than determining the offside line by drawing a line through the last part of a defender’s body, offside will now simply be a question of whether there is any gap between an attacker and a defender when you look across the pitch.

A striker can be sprinting past a defender, be almost entirely past that defender, when the pass is struck in their direction, but if even a portion of the attacker’s heel is overlapping a defender’s foot, the attacker will remain onside."

FIFA will see how the season goes in Canada, what issues it might raise, before deciding if this should be rolled out across the world.

Should create more goalsoring chances but maybe more debates. Would suit Isidor for one. As long as this is checked quickly coz five minute checks are stupid. Is it true they might check corners next season? Dear me...

The forwards of the Vancouver Whitecaps wee asked their opinion before the season opens this coming weekend..they loved it.

The defenders? Not so much.

Such a change could fundamentally change the game in a couple of ways..... a need for defenders to be the fastest on the pitch (which would likely reduce the size/strength seen in CBs today) and teams playing waaaaaaay deeper, creating a lot more space encouraging a full pitch passing and pressing game.
I doubt you will see the full effects over a trial period in a relatively low level league.

I think it’ll lead to more defensive set ups, deep back 4/5s just negating the through ball and probably make the game worse.

That said- it might bring the thunderbastard long ranger goal back to life with defences set up on penalty spot

Implementation is key.

Imo, the main factor should be that a clear mistake is visible in real speed replays. 30 seconds max. No drawing lines or debating for 5 minutes with multiple freeze frames. Otherwise, on field decision stands. There's no advantage in fractions of a body.

You could implement that under either set of rules.

It’s about time this was introduced.

The whole point in the offside rule it to prevent goal hanging, not goal scoring.

Allowing an attacker to advance by 50cm isn’t going to cause goal hanging. But it will result in a lot more goals being allowed I feel.

Long term I am not sure it makes much difference. It’s still a line, just a line in a different place. The key for me is not where the line is but whether a decision can be made on that line quickly.

It shouldn't take any longer than it does in making the lines now.
A load of shite.

Going to make defences sit deeper, negative set up and we will still be arguing over 1mm.

f***ing Wenger man

We are arguing over 1mm now. The difference is that under the new rules, the striker will already have an advantage.

So if he's offside by a toe, it won't be as bad as disallowing a goal under the same circumstances and current rules.

Issue I see with the new rule:

Striker can stand goal side of a defender as long as part of his body is overlapping part of the last defender's.
If the striker is goal side of the defender, the defender will need to pull back to cover, but that allows the striker to go further forward.

The striker can just pull the defender further and further back, until their both stood on the edge of the six yard box. The defender has a choice of either allowing the striker to take that line, or forcing him further out but allowing the striker to be goal side of him.

I've said this for ages as free kicks, goal kicks an attacker just stands behind a defender leaving a trailing foot. Then the ball comes over the defender is behind the attacker instantly which is just daft as normally attackers are much faster than defenders.

As others have said, it will mean defenders just drop deep to stop the space for attackers to run into. The beating the offside trap and running in for the ball may well suffer from this.

There's already a small advantage with the offside at the moment. But it's not enough and some don't even know it exists or say that it doesn't exist, yet it's been there since the start of the 2021/22 season. It was 10cm at one point with the old method of drawing lines (still is) and 5cm with the semi automated so all this waffle about offside by a toenail is not quite correct.

It's a stupid rule but maybe they're doing it just to show how daft it will be.

You just got me thinking, when was the last time scored from outside the penalty area in open play, similar to Daryl Murphy or Carlos Edwards ?
