New Music Releases Thread

Yeah actually I need the AOTY as I have been very poor at listening to new music this year. Might have to set myself a similar challenge as I did in 23 when I did a new album a week, with no excuses.

Bringing in a small top 5:
- Caroline 2 - caroline
- belong - Jay Som
- You are the morning - jasmine4.t
- Getting Killed - Geese (probably undoubtedly my record of the year)
- Eusexia - FKA Twigs
Think I may have to do a Top 5 as well, found it a lot harder listening to new stuff this year with a baby getting in the way of things :)

Choosing just 10 was really difficult as started with a list of over 50.

1. Horsegirl - Phonetics On And On
2. Stereolab - Instant Holograms On Metal Film
3. Panda Bear - Sinister Grift
4. Tunng - Love You All Over Again
5. Kali Malone & Drew McDowall - Magnetism
6. Modern Nature - The Heat Warps
7. Richard Dawson - End Of The Middle
8. Sacred Paws - Jump Into Life
9. The Cords - The Cords
10. Cate Le Bon - Michelangelo Dying

These missed out but on another day could've made it.
Throwing Muses, Sandwell District, Mark Pritchard & Thom Yorke, These New Puritans, Alan Sparhawk, Ensemble Nist-Nah, Gwenno, Mogwai, Emma Pollock, Kathryn Williams, Tortoise, Hania Rani, Klein (sleep with a cane), Nurse With Wound (HEALSGEBEDDA BUDGERIGAR), Pye Corner Audio, Prolapse, Gruff Rhys, Squid, Dean Wareham, Pulp.

My album of the year: Ryan Davis and the Roadhouse Band

The other nine in no particular order:

Pulp
Hesse Kassel
Stereolab
Alan Sparhawk w/Trampled By Turtles
Dove Ellis
Cass McCombs
Tortoise
Jason Isbell
Horsegirl

A load of others bubbling under (Suede, For Those I Love, Geese, Caroline amongst them).

I may be in a minority but I don't like the new Geese album quite as much as 3D Country or Cameron Winter's solo album.

I had too many for a top 5, but not enough for a top 10!

AOTY for me:

Wednesday - Bleeds

The runners up, in no particular order :

Cate le Bon - Michelangelo Dying
Freddie Gibbs & The Alchemist - Alfredo 2
Geese - Getting Killed
Clipse - Let God Sort ‘Em Out
The Horrors - Night Life
Wet Leg - Moisturizer
Turnstile - Never Enough
Deftones - Private Music

Didn’t take much convincing as Wolves v United is not holding my attention.

I’ve obviously not added duplicates and only picked peoples’ top 10s. Will add to the list whenever we have further additions

Yeah, it was December last year so missed a lot of end of year lists.
Not mine. Pitchfork need shooting with shit for listing one of those songs as their track of 2025 as well.

My ten then:

Caroline 2 - Caroline (my AOTY)
1000 Variations of the Same Song - Frog
Forever Howlong - Black Country, New Road
You Are The Morning - Jasmine.4.t
Bleeds - Wednesday
Caveman Wakes Up - Friendship
Getting Killed - Geese
In Airports - Orchid Mantis
Double Infinity - Big Thief
Man For All Seasons - Insecure Men

Honourable mentions to:

Moneyball - Dutch Interior
Miners Ballads - Barry Hyde
A Study of Losses - Beirut
Tuesday Paper Club - Brogeal
The Count - Frog
Headlights - Alex G
Losin' - Colin Miller

The final dribbling of new releases of the year are near. There are albums this week from Fred Again., Nas & DJ Premier, This Is Lorelei, HEALTH, Gabi Delgado & Marc Hurtado, Kahil El'Zabar and Silvana Estrada.

Edgar Jones (The Stairs) released an album last week. Not heard it yet but it's a one take thing with old songs reimagined. Saw him a few months back and he was in very good form so it should be good.

A mixture of me not listening as much this year and what feels like, to my taste, not the best of years - top 4 only:

The Land We Knew The Best - Chris Eckman

Carving the Stone - For Those I Love

Let God Sort ‘Em Out - Clipse

Sable/fable - Bon Iver

Seems a funky kid, enjoyed his performance on Graham Norton a few weeks ago ♥️
Favourite new album that got me a bit obsessed is called West End Girl by Lily Allen, a very interesting listen that tells a really sad story tbh.....
