@Arkle has given up on his reviews?
I've fallen so far behind that my own arse is ahead of me (I don't regret going to Kenya for work and eating the best octpous I've ever had though) but I'll review this week and then also immediately list Friday's new releases because I'm at a conference all day tomorrow (at my own work place). On we go:
The Linda Lindas: not as much fun as their debut. Punk pop with a maturing edge. Still quite fun!
Tucker Zimmerman: an old man sings his songs, Big Thief play, the world crumbles in awe.
Kevin Fowley: this came out a while back but I only just listened. Introspective indie in French. More an EP than album. Very good.
Field Music: it's Field Music, it's good.
Dawes: doesn't break the mold but a very good Dawes album. Laurel Canyon 1970s only not.
Goat: it's Goat, it's good. Maybe a little more nuanced than earlier releases but still the same psych rock gumbo.
Abstract Crimewave: two thirds of Peter, Bjorn and John with guests. Pretty good.
Dar Disku:South Asian disco beats gone 2024. Pretty marvellous.
Dummy: extremely good. They remind me of Broekn Social Scene when Broken Social Scene were good.
Throat: not sure if that's the band name or the album. Anyway, one of The Coral (Nick Power) plus a mate doing a sort of Coral'hauntolofy hybrid. Fascinating.
Ty Segall: an EP that came out a while ago. The master of garage rock makes an EP of percussion based insturmentals. File under side project.
The Jesse Malin comp "Silver Patron Saints": came out a while ago and is bloody good. Big names gathering round for the man in his time of need.
Barry Archie Johnson: instrumental pieces that are really good. I suppose dark indie rock of some sort.
Tomorrow's Fashions (comp): one of Bob Stanley's compilations, which are always good. This is library electronica from the 70s to mid 80s. Interesting.
Album of the week: Tucker Zimmerman easily
.
On with Friday's releases: there are albums from American Football, Christopher Owens, Confidence Man, Cunningham Bird (Andrew Bird and Madison Cunningham covering Buckingham Nix), Emma Anderson, Japandroids (supposedly their final album), Jennifer Hudson, Joe Jonas, Jordana, Karate, Kelly Lee Owens, Kylie Minogue, Liela Moss, Mc5, Nap Eyes, Oliver Coates, Porridge Radio, Shawn Mendes, Silverbacks, Tim Heidecker, WH Lung, Keeley, Kelly Finnigan, Justin Adams & Mauro Durante, Jake Shimabukuro & Mick Fleetwood and Ella Raphael.
The &s are joint albums, the and is to denote last on the list before anyone asks.
