New Music Releases Thread

As I'm off to Green Man first thing tomorrow, posting the new releases for Friday a bit early. We have albums from Blind Pilot, Charly Bliss, Falling in Reverse, Foster The People, Hamish Hawk, Matty, Morgan Wade, Pom Poko, Post Malone, Ray LaMontagne, Urban Heat, Chuck Johnson, Wishy, and Hifi Sean & David McAlmont.

I'll probably start my listening on Monday. Looking forward to three or four of them...
Have fun Arkle! Good lineup this year I think. Know a few people going too. Will be aiming to get tickets for next year I reckon

Enjoy! Looks v canny.

I'll probably give Charly Bliss a go, though expecting disappointment - Guppy (their debut) was one of my faves of the past 6-7 years, but the follow-up was a bit too pop for me, and the new singles thus far have sounded like a further trip down that bland path

So, Green Man then, really, really good as always.

First the food and drink: Barnaby Sykes pies as always very good, paella a bit crap, Indonesian coconut curry saved by their chilli sauce, Thai place decent (green curry better than panang better than pad thai), Goan fish curry lovely, toasties at the bus thing adequate, spicy Scotch egg fro the local school stall good but not really spicy. For the drinks, the Green Man IPA was very good, the two or three beers I had from the Courtyard Bar were excellent.

On to the music:

Thursday: a great opening evening. Sheer Mag are ace live, Kokoko! were brilliant (singer pretty much had to be dragged off stage). HMS Morris were nice and spiky, Islet are arguably Britain's best live band and Das Koolies did bleepy stuff.
Friday: Opus Kink sounded good, want to check out their recorded stuff, Blue Bendy very nice (singer tucks his t-shirt into his trousers though), Hurray For the Riff Raff cancelled (can't remember the name of the replacement band but deeply annoying), Lime Garden decent (but bad name), Jesus and Mary Chain in conversation good fun (Jim Reid had a hilarious vomit related story), Beak> magnificent, Personal Trainer great, think I then saw some comedy (possibly Stuart Goldsmith), One Leg One Eye quite scary (doom folk), Jesus and Mary Chain doing music great.
Saturday: Toni Sancho nice voice, pub rock band, The Nightingales were ace and I got a free badge, Rachael Lavelle beautiful and haunting (and such a big voice in such a small person), BDRMM awesome (can see them moving up festival bills), Tapir! were spectacular, King Creosote was lovely, TBA turned out to be Porridge Radio who were good, Sam Morton cancelled to be replaced by Jjuujjuu who were really good (doing their second set of the day), Devendra Banhart was good (Wales is the home of disco, apparently), Big Thief, I was tired but they were Big Thief.
Sunday: went in a bit late but Brown Horse may well have been my band of the weekend, Royel Otis were fun (bad Shrek joke aside), Pictish Trail was as always terrific (think he's the only artist to have bee involved in every Green Man in some way), Black Country, New Road, some good, some weird, not sure they've totally found their way at the moment, Michael Head & the Red Elastic Band were my Unthanks emotional moment (why isn't he regarded as a national treasure?). John Francis Flynn lovely folk, Explosions In The Sky chimily wonderful, a great end to the weekend.

Special mention to the staff of Babbler's Bar who were incredibly entertaining over the weekend.

Anybody like Jim Noir? He released one of my fave albums ever, tower of love, early 2000's. Released a few more good albums, then went missing for years. Just listened to his latest e.p This was That( side A ), and it's brilliant.Beach Bum being my fave song. New album coming out in September n'all. If you like the beach boys, the kinks at their most fey,the aliens, professor yaffle, gruff rhys, you will love this. It's got a lovely vintage gentle 60's sound to it. Hope he tours soon

I'll review last week's releases at some point, once I've actually listened to them. In the meantime, tomorrow we have new albums from Bryce Dessner, Fontaines DC, Gillian Wlech & David Rawlings, Illuminati Hotties, Jeff Schroder, Lainey Wilson, Magdalena Bay, Mura Masa, Orlando Weeks, Sabrina Carpenter, Sofi Tukker, Spirit of the Beehive, Susanna, The Softies, Thomas Rhett, Uniform, Andrew Combs, Jon Anderson & the Band Geeks, Kishi Bashi, Thee Heart Tones and The Harlem Gospel Travelers.

Right, I've now given last Friday's new releases (plus some stuff I missed when it came out) the once over. My opinions:

Emiliana Torrini: I missed this in June. Very, very good, a bit Regina/Joanna, clever lyrics, nice vocals.
Orcas: decent enough indie/college rock from a duo who have been away for a good while.
Bill Callahan: a live album that crept out a week or three back. Many of the songs will be familiar. As live albums go, majestic.
New Starts: Darren Hayman's new band. Might be the best thing he's done since Hefner's early output. Quite riffy. Excellent!
Pom Poko: third album of female fronted post-punk from Norway. It's pretty good.
Ray LaMontagne: Captain Inconsistent is on a good one here. Soulful Americana, which is lovely throughout.
Chuck Johnson: really good. He's usually associated with ambient Americana but this nudges toward post-rock.
Hamish Hawk: I like this (and his last album as well). Literate, hooky songs about sometimes daek subjects.
Foster The People: I'd forgotten they existed. Surprisingly funky and rather good.
Wishy: 90s influenced indie rock, decent enough but not massively special.
Hi Fi Sean and David McAlmont: McAlmont's voice is great. The album is decent. A bit more dancey than I remember their first collaboration being.

Album of the week: if it had been a studio album, cearly BIll Callahan but I really was surprised by the New Starts album so that. Emiliana Torrini, Chuck Johnson, Ray LaMontagne, Hamish Hawk and Foster the People all go in the unreservedly good pile also.

New Melt-Banana album out today. Good fun as usual. Playing the cluny soon. Never seem to be able to make it when they're playing near and I dont think it's going to be any different this time.

New Fontaines record is excellent. Can hear so many influences on there. Couple of songs sound like they could have been released on Sub Pop in the early 90’s. I think they’ve also been listening to DIIV. Best song on the album has a Lana Del Rey vibe. It’s very much a leap forward creatively for them

Can't get that Geordie Greep song out of my mind  doing my head in. It's infectious.

Was gonna wait for the album to see if I liked it before getting a ticket to see him at the Cluny but I've already caved and bought one this morning.
Got mine yday, can imagine his backing band will be fantastic musicians so should be a canny night
