New Music Releases Thread

Listened to a bit of Mercy Music, Mick. Did enjoy it but unfortunately I find there are lots of others in the pop punk genre that I find more entertaining. Will probably listen a bit more though so will be giving better analysis once I’ve done some more of it.

Was wondering about Mercy Music as they look interesting but my pop punk barometer reads quite high.
 

Slightly later than usual, my weekly review:

The Endless Coloured Ways (The Songs of Nick Drake): a compilation of Nick Drake covers. Some well known artists and generally of a very high quality.
Gabriels: the full album (6 extra tracks relative to part 1). They're terrific and it is excellent.
Riders of the Canyon: Catalan singer songwriter Joana Serrat in full band mode. Excellent Americana. You'll probably like this if you like Neil Young.
Jim O'Rourke: ambient soundscapes, which is what he does now. Soundtrack album for a film.
PJ Harvey: she's one of those artists who I tend to judge against her own work (see also Nick Cave, Mogwai etc.). This probably occupies the mid-ground between White Chalk and Let England Shake musically. Lyrically, it's based around her poetry, lots of Elvis references for some reason.
Thala: an EP of grungey indie rock. File under promising.
Tony Allen/Adrian Younge: part of the ongoing Jazz is Dead series. Jazz tracks bolstered by Allen's terrific drumming essentially.
Anohni (and the Johnsons): very good. The voice is still terrific. Less electronic than the last couple of Anohni releases, more soulful.
Julie Byrne: mentioned above. It's exceptional. Great voice, great songs. Up there.
Michael James Tapscott: gentle, flokish indie with some exceptional songs.
Caterina Barbieri: here be analogue synths. Very good.
Little Dragon: arthouse pop that TBH does very little for me.
Local Natives: decent. They've combined the early guitar based stuff with their later synthy things to decent effect here.

Album of the week: probably Julie Byrne but Gabriels, PJ Harvery, Anohni,MJ Tapscott, riders of the Canyon and the Nick Drake comp all go close.
 
Need to spend a bit time with the PJ Harvey record. Think it's going to take a few listens to appreciate it. Just found a really good EP that was released by London band Moin last week called Clocked Off. Enjoyed a few of their releases now.

There are new albums this week from Blake Mitchell, Claud, Colter Wall, Gordon Lightfoot, J Hus, Kool & the Gang, Lindstrom, Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real, Mahalia, Palehound, Paul Langlois Band, PVRIS, Glaive, Alaska Reid, Being Dead, Current Affairs and Sam Burton.

Seems a slow week but my copy of the new issue of Uncut (the reviews from which contribute to my list) is probably on my doormat at home while I'm up at my mam's.

There’s a new Disclosure album out today, think it only got announced a few days ago.
 
My weekly review. It's a slow week so some of these are things I'd missed.

Lindstrom - good. It's basically his propulsive electronica but a bit more summery.
Being Dead - lo-fi US indie, girl-boy vocals, just the right side of irritating to be good.
Current Affairs - US post-punk indie. Might be just the wrong side of good to be mildly irritating.
Sam Burton - has that Jonathan Wilson 1970s Laurel Canyon vibe (it's produced by Wilson). Good songs.
Kiran Leonard - really good, as mentioned above. Ostensibly a live album but you can only tell that from the applause at the end.
Moin - an EP of experimental post-rock. Listenable.
Your Heart Breaks - a top tip from @chunkyshitehawk53 this. Ostensibly a one man outfit with multiple collaborators. Very moreish US indie.
Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real - more country than I remember their previous albums being. Pretty good.
Palehound - operating on the boundary between indie rock and Americana, this is very, very good.
Colter Wall - old school country balladeering. Very good TBH.

Album of the week: probably Palehound, in part because it was released this week whereas the Kiran Leonard and Your Heart Breaks albums weren't.

Agreed Palehound was a very good album, Your Heart Breaks and Being Dead decent too, couldn't get away with the Current Affairs one, like you said vocals far too irritating.
