New Music Releases Thread

There are new releases tomorrow from 12 Rods, Angelo De Augustine, bdrmm, Brigid Mae Power, Charlie Watts, Frank Zappa, Grian Chatten, John Carroll Kirby, Lucinda Williams, The Japanese House, LYR, Khanate, Divide & Dissolve and Nicholas Allbrook.
Jim Bob album is also out tomorrow.

My usual weekly review:

Khanate: One of Stephen O'Malley's non-Sunn O))) bands. Doom metal, a little more conventional than Sunn O))). Screechy vocals, three 20 minute-ish tracks.
bdrmm: they're very good. There's something akin to early Ride about this album.
Nicholas Allbrook: solo album from established band's singer number 1 for the week. This time Pond. It's not as rock as Pond tend to be. Resembles Suede and Bowie at times, very good.
Brigid Mae Power: she's consistently very good. Irish alt-folk basically. A fine companion to the recent Lankum album (although not quite as good).
Lucinda Williams: her 16th album and first since she had a stroke. This is a really good album of what I'm calling blue collar Americana. Bruce does backing/co vocals on one track.
Grian Chatten: solo album from established band's singer number 2 for the week. This time Fontaines DC. Quieter and more introspective than Fontaines but very good all the same.
Angelo De Augustine: one for fans of Sufjan's less electronic albums. He's very talented, cracking voice.
Divide and Dissolve: Aussie instrumental doom metallers go from strength to strength. There's something quasi-classical about this.
John Carroll Kirby: this week's jazz album. It's good and gets better as it goes on. He's worked with a lot of big names so knows what he's doing.
Do Nothing: their debut is eventually out and it's, well, okay. Everything is there from the early EPs and singles but the edge just seems to have gone a little.
Lyr: Simon Armitage's band return. Essentially he recites poems and someone else sings over gentle post-rock. Really very good.

Album of the week: could be any of about 7 of them. I'll just about give it to bdrmm.

Indoor Voices for shoegazey goodness

Bdrmm is very good, much better than I was expecting. I thought we'd get more of the same but they've added another layer of depth.

That Grian Chatten record is canny as well. I'm not really a big fan of Fontaines DC either.

Geese is also good fun. They're the Foxygen of the 2020s (if you ignore the Lemon Twigs)...I've just got tickets to see them in Manchester next month.

There are new releases tomorrow from Anohni (named as Anohni and the Johnsons in some places), Dominic Fike, Golden Features, Julie Byrne, Liam Corcoran, Little Dragon, Local Natives, Nita Strauss, PJ Harvey, Taylor Swift (her re-recording of Speak Now), Gabriels, Jim O'Rourke, Michael james Tapscott, Thala and Tony Allen & Adrian Younge.

Just flicking on my Spotify and noticed that Kiran Leonard has a new release this week too
It’s a live album I think. Just listened and well… it’s certainly something. Not very coherent but that’s very on brand

Julie Byrne’s record going straight into record of the year contention for me

Oddly enough, just listened to it. Very good. She has the voice! My listening so far has indicated a strong week. A couple of crackers I missed from my new releases for the week amongst other things (the Nick Drake tribute compilations and Rifers of the Canyon, which admittedly came out two weeks back but is terrific).

Very rare I get a Sunday to indulge in new music so put a few on from the list of the week. It’s very very good for me

Listened to a bit of Mercy Music, Mick. Did enjoy it but unfortunately I find there are lots of others in the pop punk genre that I find more entertaining. Will probably listen a bit more though so will be giving better analysis once I’ve done some more of it.
