It’s all getting very quiet, I would have thought artists/labels would be keen to at least get their new stuff onto streaming/download services even if they couldn’t get physical distribution sorted.

CSH and Diet Cig for me this week.

And one from my favourite band, Happyness.

I spoke with one manager earlier in the week who said his bands have traditionally relied on physical to account for around 80% of first week sales. This is down to in-stores mostly (playing Rough Trade, Banquet etc and making those shows wristband-only when purchasing vinyl/cd) and ticket bundling i.e. buy the vinyl, get a ticket to the next headline show. Then there’s the obvious - simply going to the shops to buy the record. With social distancing, that’s all out the window for the foreseeable. If you’re an indie band or indie label, you’re gonna hold the record back during this period unless you have very little other choice. There’ll be a glut later in the year.

Exciting news for us Arab Strap fans. They've announced that they'll have some news this week. Some amusing comments from Malcolm Middleton and others have been posted in response on the band's Facebook page (they're getting ribbed for announcing an announcement). I'm expecting new material and hopefully some dates as it's no secret Malcolm and Aidan have been working together again.

It's the Arab Strap archive available through bandcamp. 20 new digital releases with a mix of rare stuff, a compilation, gigs and a shedload of demos. Kicks off 9am tomorrow at name your own price cost.

EOB: A bit dull TBH. Lies midway between Thom Yorke's solo stuff and Phil Selway's solo stuff.
ive had this on today, hadnt heard any of his stuff previously... wasnt as dull as i was expecting, although you hear what he brings to the radiohead sound without really adding much more... so its really 1/5th a decent radiohead album.

Yeah, cheers Arkle. Their other plans remain on hold. I'm gonna be listening to a lot of Arab Strap in May!

"Like all our fellow musicians our plans for this year are postponed while we wait for the world to be safe again. However this surprise time off means we finally got round to something we’ve talked about for years: the Arab Strap Archive. We’ve always felt some of our best moments happened away from our usual studios and we hope this archive helps prove that true. including: the 1997 LIVE 7″ and 2002 Quiet Violence EP; A new compilation, Sanitized Broadcast 99-03; all our unheard demos from 1995 onwards; 10 full gigs (with 9 different line-ups) including a “lost” 1999 live album; and many more rare and previously unheard tracks too. It’s a history of Arab Strap through the back roads and alleyways and because we’re all living in financially uncertain times everything will be Name Your Price for the foreseeable future so you only need to pay whatever you can afford, or just stream for free. The Arab Strap Archive is exclusive to Bandcamp and we will open for business at 9 AM tomorrow"

For the uninitiated and at the risk of coming across like a stalker, Malcolm Middleton and Aidan Moffat both have their own bandcamp pages too.

The label Full Time Hobby also has a Malcolm Middleton page with other stuff available.

Not all free, but lots of interesting stuff for Arab Strap fans.
