New Music Releases Thread

There's a fair bit to get through this week. Barely touched the Underworld stuff (only started listening now). For other things:

Vetiver - solid enough pych-folk. Their seventh album and you kind of know what you'll get.
A Winged Victory For The Sullen - as with past albums, they straddle the gap between classical and post-rock. Arguably more the former than latter this time.
Leif Vollebekk - kind of a piano based Bon Iver, I guess. Good songs, slightly MOR.
Michael Kiwanuka - he's becoming very, very good indeed! Reminds me a bit of late period Terry Callier at times.
Jeff Lynne's ELO - pleasant enough, sounds like ELO.
Fenella - keyboard based psychedelia. Sounds like Jane Weaver with less vocals, which is more or less what it is.
Cup - Nels Cline and his wife (Yuko Honda from Cibo Matto) being quite arthouse and experimental. Has its moments!
Spearmint - they're ace! Just good old school indiepop with the odd keyboard and cracking lyrics. Business as usual!
Warmduscher - probably my album of the week. They remind me of Earl Brutus if they'd had an American frontman.
Itasca - straightforward but high quality female singer-songwriter with a guitar stuff.
Sudan Archives - R'n'B with added violin and African rhythms. Well worth checking out...
Omni - arthouse post-punk from Atlanta. There's one new album each week that reminds me a bit of Field Music and this is it.
William Doyle - I guess it continues on from East India Youth in style. A little shoegazey, a little electronica, a lot very good!

Kiwanuka is very terry caller, which is no bad thing

fully agree about Michael K, it’s very very good. Need to listen to William Doyle so will do on way home.

Not the best week after a rush of crackers

Looking forward to the second solo Foo Fighter of the year. Other than TH and Mount Eerie, I’m not familiar with much on there - any recommendations?

Not recommendations as such but:

Girl Ray's debut was indiepop, and very good, this album supposedly is a bit more mainstream pop influenced but is getting good reviews.
The Rumback and Walker album and the JR Bohannon album will both be instrumental folk/blues guitar stuff.
Xylouris White are a Greek/Australian duo. Fantastic live. Traditional Greek music. The reviews for this album aren't great however.
Kele is the singer from Bloc Party.
FKA Twigs does arty R'n'B flecked electronic pop. Loved by the broadsheets.
The Good Ones are Rwandan so Afrobeat kind of stuff.
Giant Swan do urgent, aggressive electronic dance music (according to google). Their album got a good review in Uncut.
Josienne Clarke is a folkie singer.

That twigs record is going to be an AOTY contender. Read a 10/10 in Loud And Quiet and I'm sure there's similar scores on the way.

Girly Ray got a 1 1/2 star review in DIY which surprised me. Thought the lead single back was really promising; best they've had out even.

9/10 in Uncut for Twigs as well (they rarely if ever give 10/10). Think they gave Girl Ray 8/10. Looking at the DIY review, I don't think the reviewer is a fan of them at all. He wasn't keen on the first album either.

Matt Maltese as well tomorrow.

Good lad ;)

Album releases aside, this is a good piece on the new wave of hyped (deservedly or otherwise!) British bands: All talk: why 2019's best bands speak instead of sing

Pretty middling review in tomorrow's Guardian for twigs. I'm intrigued now!
